The Extremely Exhaustive Evgeni Malkin Primer: Further Updates!

What can I say. That Evgeni Malkin, he keeps on existing.

Old Stuff (Recently Found)
  • Tumblr user BearsEtc put together this great post on Geno from when he was a rookie and in a documentary comparing him to Peter Forsberg. It's utterly adorable and contains many gifs and feels.
  • This Sports Illustrated Article from 2012 is a gem. There's a lot on his relationship with Sid in there, including a prank Geno pulled on him by taping his sticks wrong (which is funnier than it sounds).
  • This really old Rob Rossi article popped up a while back, and the entire point of it is basically "Geno is really smart". And he's apparently a card shark. A fluff piece, but an interesting one.
  • This article is just pure, unadulturated feels about how much Geno loves hockey and Pens hockey. That's it. That's the article.
  • And here's A nice NYTimes article from the 2009 cup run (right before he won the Conn Smythe).
  • A translated interview from October, where we learn Geno's favorite food, drink, and that he's afraid of having no friends. Awww!

The Rest of the Lockout, 2012
November 2012
  • Geno gets an instagram! If you have not had the distinct pleasure of following Geno's instagram, I cannot recommend doing that highly enough. There will be a lot of pictures from it in the rest of the primer, because if you've ever wanted to see Geno do things like inexplicably hold a ceramic shark or post things like the Pens as the Penguins from Madagascar (which is his profile picture), this is the place to do it.

The best instagram pictures from November are probably Geno making friends with goats:

And Geno making friends with small children:

    As he does.
  • This article, when translated, tells the story of how a butterfly got into the Mettalurg rink and Geno took it outside and saved it, because of course he did.
  • Geno appeared on The Russian version of Celebrity Poker. I have no idea what's going on because it's all in Russian, all I know is I watched it because Geno is smiley, cute, and wearing a white t-shirt.

  • Geno appeared in Russia's OK! Magazine.

It's a fairly gossipy article with not a lot of substance, from what I can tell via Google Translate. Geno's very charming and down-to-earth and humble, the reporter is fairly gushing, etc, etc, etc. There's a long awkward thread on Geno and Oksana, who were at the time together. I say "at the time" because they broke up this summer. We'll get to that later.

December 2013
Geno kept fairly quiet in December and continued to light up the KHL. The lockout ended in late December, and his final stats remained some of the best in the KHL through the entire year, even though he only played half a season there.

2013 Season

NOTE: If you want a more complete idea of what was happening with the Pens during any given time, PensTV produces something called "In the Room", which is a behind-the-scenes look at the team. If you want to watch from the 2013 season, they are compiled here (they're Season 2 of in the room, so start on video 12).

January:
Geno seemed pretty happy to be back in Pittsburgh:

Getting back into the swing of things with his buddies James Neal (whose friendship with Geno I unintentionally gloss over because there aren't actual articles about it, but seriously, they're very close and play extremely well together):

And Sid:

Also, Geno made a friend with a lobster, and by "made a friend" I mean "probably ate it afterward":

But overall, January was a pretty quiet month for Geno.

February continued to start quietly. Geno made bird friends at the Pittsburgh Zoo:

And pancakes:

And was trucking along scoring goals until this happened:

Which caused him to miss most of March with both concussion and shoulder problems. What he did not miss in March was Skates and Plates, where Pens players dress up in tuxes and serve some very lucky people dinner for charity:

He also formally recieved his Ted Lindsay award (MVP as voted by the players).

Also, this article came out, and while it's a bit of the same-old, same-old, it's still a nice article.

Geno spent the rest of the season plagued with recurring shoulder problems and was in and out, but still managed 33 points in 31 games, which is, you know, pretty impressive.

(Geno from the Shirts Off Their Backs event, where during the last game of the regular season players give lucky season ticket holders their jerseys. This adorable kid won Geno's. Lucky bastard.)

In the playoffs, the Pens went pretty far, beating the Islanders, then the Senators (where Geno had to play against Gonch, though they spent their off-time in between games hanging out), then were swept by the Bruins in the conference finals, and Geno headed back to Russia.

But first he went to the shooting range. Because why not, Geno and guns:

And he signed an EIGHT YEAR DEAL (the longest a deal can last according to the new NHL rules) that essentially makes him a Penguin for the rest of his career, or, at least, the next nine years. There were a lot of emotional articles. And emotional people. Like me. I was really emotional.

Summer of 2013
Geno seems, if his instagram is any indication, to be having a fun summer full of his favorite things; traveling, penguins:

Making friends with small children:

Getting glasses that cause me heart palpitations because hi there:

And generally being adorable:

(He also wished Sid a happy birthday, aw!)

The only slight drama, if it can be called that, seems to be in the romance department. (WARNING: gossip ahead, take with a grain of salt.) Geno and Oksana hung out earlier this summer which a lot of people (myself included) took to mean they were still going out, but then several articles came out that said they'd ended their relationship earlier that summer. Geno also has been linked to longjumper and model Darya Klishina.

Originally, the only article that linked them together was this one, which seemed pretty shady, since it claimed they'd been together a year, and that would make no sense since less than a year ago was the OK! article where Geno was with Oksana. But then Darya posted this picture of Geno on her official public facebook wall and thanked him for coming to support her, so who knows? There may be a grain of truth, there may not.

Either way, in a month, camp and pre-season will be starting up again, Geno will be coming back to the 'Burgh, and another glorious year of hockey will await us all. Hoorah!
