Have there been any math or physics papers written about the optimal way path to cut through a nonuniformally tensioned compressible solid so that the resulting cut is straight once uncompressed?
I think this is the reason for failure in my current bread-cutting strategy. I'll start cutting a loaf, it'll look like I'm making a nice clean cut cleaving a slice of uniform thickness leaving a loaf with pleasingly perpendicular sides, and then the loaf and slice spring back revealing my latest asymmetrical, misshapen horror.
