Our New Alternative Universe

Mar 11, 2009 16:56

Patton Oswalt did a comedy bit a while ago about how the 2003 political landscape seemed like we were living in a bad alternate universe. For a few years it did actually feel that way to me - I found myself arguing with otherwise sane, rational people who said that torture should be legal, quagmire was success, that soldiers were safer than Read more... )

I have been overly stressed lately at the venom of Digg commenters. The rightwingers seem to be out in force and as irrational as ever ( ... )

It never hurts to be cautiously optimistic. I do wonder if you've neglected the cautious part, but time will tell?

However your rationale for the Obama win is decidedly from an alternative universe. I suspect he won because he was the better politician, and most likely even the better candidate. And yes... that is damning with faint praise. I'm not so sure that beating a McCain is reason for rejoicing.

It also remains to be seen if the notion of a Pyrrhic victory creeps further into the commentary from the liberal left? No lesser lights than Paglia and Fineman are already showing concern about the smart, educated, objective pragmatist we've elected.

wasn't it more a revolt against the absurdity of Pallin? drieuxster March 12 2009, 17:39:44 UTC
You do well to note that McCain was mostly still in the game right up to the point when folks had to wonder about Sarah....

There are varios absurdities in the current Obama position that are problematic because of his commitment to dahling folly of the hard left. Such as the majikal thinking about 'gun control' - and the idea that the outlawing of some types of ammunition will fix the core problems of why there are gun killings.

It was a better improvement when the economics of being a crack dealer made it a greater trade off to shoot one's enemies in the butt, which is massively embarrassing, but not as liable, as outright killing them....

So the nation is going to have to work out which parts of the center it wants to have the great consensus building to occur it.

Which will also mean keeping the wacko left wingers under control as well.

{ it is a great time to go back and re-read krugman's peddling prosperity, and review the problems of strategic trading as the left's supply syde mythos. }

Candidly I was quite happy with the Palin choice. Up until then I was considering voting for Obama - seriously! I had no 'pie-in-the-sky' motives, mind you, I just didn't care for McCain.

what was it that made pallin more attractive? and why was she not on the top of the ticket to lead the charge against the communists....

I think the bigger problem is will she be able to run for president in 2010?

but dubya was a radical hard leftist draft dodger who hated freedom! drieuxster March 12 2009, 17:19:33 UTC
The problem with you godless liberals is that you are not willing to face facts!

Dubya was some radical left wing big government hate freedom type who was stabbing our troops in the back with his atheism and unamericanism.

But you Evil Liberals are not willing to take personal responsibility for having brutally imposed your Atheistic Evil Liberal Capitalist Wall Streeterism on our White Christian America....

Dude, that other story line was so last when ever...

Remember one goes to war with reality, not with the reality that one wants but the reality that one is at war with....
