A Final Plea for Phone Banking

I'm going to Nevada this weekend to canvass for Obama. If you live in a solid red state or a solid blue state and you think your vote isn't going to change anything, if you'd like to do more than just write another check, visit your local election office or sign up on my.barackobama.com and make some calls. One of the reasons why the Nevada and New Mexico campaigns have been so successful is out-of-state callers. If Californians are working the phones for New Mexico, every local New Mexico volunteer can be out on the street and knocking on doors. Out-of-staters help in a big way by freeing up locals to do what they do best.

The campaign and is in "get out the vote" mode now. Early voting has opened in at least half the states. We have enough voter support to win this election; all we need to do is get the voters to the polls. You will not be calling Republicans or undecideds to convince them to change their vote, you will be identifying existing Obama supporters and helping them make their vote count. You'll be telling them about early voting and directing them to early polling stations. You'll be telling them how and where to obtain vote-by-mail ballots. You'll be reminding them of deadlines and asking them to make sure that their county clerk isn't sending ballots to registered Republicans early or dragging their feet for Democrats. You'll be suggesting that they hand-carry their ballots either to the nearest Obama campaign office or directly to the County Recorder to prevent tampering en route, a concern in some districts. You'll be recording the names of voters who have already voted so that campaign workers can check that their votes have been recorded. All of this is very important not just for victory but to safeguard the integrity of the process, especially in places where Republicans control the election office.

If anything, do it for the bragging rights. If Obama is half the superstar some people say he's going to be, being able to say that you were part of this campaign would be like saying "I worked for Kennedy" for Democrats or "I worked for Reagan" for Republicans. You'll also get to take a look inside an impressively well-run organization. Gore and Kerry might have had a chance if they'd ran things half this well.

It's not hard. It's not scary. It's fun and empowering. You get to meet some cool people, a few oddballs, and a lot of people you wouldn't normally meet. Find your local campaign office here and FINISH HIM.
