Talking about useless things gives them power

You know how the devil is supposed to appear if you speak his name? Speaking his name gives him power. That's kinda how I feel about certain totally useless people and things. Things so useless that even negative publicity is good publicity.

Take a certain celebrity heir. As far as I can tell she has never done a single worthwhile thing in her life, apart from the distinction of making even worse movies than I have. She is famous just for being famous. Even if you're just talking about how much you hate her you're still helping her career by keeping her famous. And that is why I have not used her name in this post nor shall I speak of this matter again.

I have much the same opinion of a certain recently released movie. There's nothing wrong with coming up with Intelligent Design as an idea and floating it in a book. Attempting to advance a scientific theory that turns out to not actually be scientific is only bad in an "aw shucks, better luck next time" sort of way. But once your theory fails peer review you can't be a sore loser about it. The New York Times calls it a "willful misunderstanding" and its own advertising calls it satirical rather than a straightforward documentary. The hamfisted PR attempted to get people riled up appears to have failed, and I'd like to think that I did my part by avoiding all mention.

Memes spread because people talk about them. Talking positively or negatively about useless or corrosive people or concepts is the intellectual equivalent of kissing your friends with a mouth full of cold sores. This post and links to this post will hopefully be the only time that I will discuss these matters positively or negatively.
