Today I successfully got my MacBook Pro to send a full-resolution 1:1 1080 line signal to the 1080p Sony LCD panel that we have at work. At
kraquehaus's
request I will explain how I did it.
First, get a DVI to HDMI cable. You can't use VGA because VGA won't carry enough data for 1080p.
Don't pay a lot for that muffler. Plugging the cable into your DVI cable ought to make autodetection happen. If you can't select a resolution as large as 1920x1080 it means you need a better video card.
Here's the bit that was tricky: on the TV screen under "Options" select "
Overscan". This will send the full 1080p image without the black borders around the edges.
Finally set the color profile to "Standard" or "Custom". "Vivid" is the bullshit mode that they default their TVs to in showrooms so that the image is saturated, contrasty, and blue. You want the same color that you see on your regular TV screen.
If everything works well
this black-and-white checkerboard ought to fit exactly onto the screen without any weird
moire patterns from rescaling. If that works, try putting your face about a foot away from the screen and rotate your head slightly. You will get weird visual artifacts and possibly a massive headache.
