Daylight Saving Time, My Ass

I'd like to go on record as being against Daylight Saving Time.

I grew up in Arizona, where it is the same goddamn time all year long. We managed just fine. In the winter it got dark at night and it stayed darker longer and we were OK with this, as countless generations of our ancestors have been for millions of years.

This business about pretending that we can make the sun rise one hour earlier in the summer is ridiculous. Right now sunrise happens at 7:26am, four hours before noon, and goes down at 7:14, seven and change after noon. That's just not right. If we weren't using this system sunrise would be happening at 6:26am (~5hr before noon) and sunset would be happening at 6:14pm (~6hr after noon) which would make a lot of sense.

Japan, Best Country Ever, does not observe Daylight Saving Time and they get along just fine. Those wonderful Shinto/Buddhists accept the natural world for what it is and live as best they can within it, and they think we're crazy. I will repeat that again. The Japanese think we're crazy for doing this, and frankly I see their point.

"But tongodeon", you say, "I like not sleeping through the morning and having a lot of daylight after work."

Fine. Let's have "summer business hours" from 8-4, then. If cafes and ski lifts can do that then we can too. But don't go altering the index of one of the dimensions of the universe just because you enjoy a sunlit game of afternoon tee-ball.
