Sad woman

matrushkaka and I just got into the door from our Austin->SF flight. Sitting next to us on the second leg was one of the saddest things I've seen in a while.

Late 20s / early 30s woman. Overweight by a good bit. Spent the entire plane flight reading copies of "Us Magazine" and "InTouch Weekly". She spent a lot of time dwelling on the "hottest celebrity bodies" sections. Her left forearm was covered in a patchwork of self-inflicted scars, a bas-relief approximation of plaid.

It's easy to read this secondhand and dismiss or explain away the details - maybe she's a Hollywood talent scout with a private interest in body modification or something. But sitting next to her left me with the feeling that this was a profoundly dissatisfied and unhappy person who didn't have to be living her life in the several different ways converging in that particular way.
