Why I haven't said anything about Lebanon/Israel/Hezbollah

Aug 07, 2006 15:02

A lot of my LJ posts are written for myself more than anyone else. When there's a big issue that I honestly do not understand but feel like I ought to have an informed opinion on I'll start writing a post and in the process I'll end up working out how I feel about it.

The conflict between Israel, its irregular militant non-state-army neighbors, and their official-state hosts is one of those very complicated issues I'm still working through. I started writing a Lebanon/Israel/Hezbollah post almost two weeks ago, but I haven't finished yet because it's a VERY complicated issue. Lots of history, several recent changes, and many different and sometimes conflicting views of what's actually going on over there. That's also the major problem that I have with most LJ entries about the subject: most posts gallop straight for a rather inconvenient thesis without avoiding some rather difficult realities about the problem and the actors.

I'm kinda rooting against the ceasefire. Normally I'm in favor of diplomatic solutions over armed conflict but for purely irrational and selfish reasons I'll feel like my time has been wasted if a diplomatic solution makes my opinion piece moot before it's even posted.
