Why not try "constructive engagement" - a term first coined by the Kapitulationist Appeaser Richard M. Nixon, who, after stabbing our valiant fighting forces in the Back, and abandoning our South Vietnamese Allies to the Ravages of the Mongol Hordes, sought to translate 'detente' from the cheese eating surrenderist language of the FreedomLanders. Since it goes beyond merely 'appeasement' - even in the context of the child with candy concern - and into the space where one can start working on the internal dialectical tensions of the opposite sides ideological fiasco.
So while the disctinctions may well be nuanced, there is a clear and compelling distinction! Chamberlain was never interested in Exporting Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll, and Blue Jeans to germany. Whereas, as I am sure you will recall from the intelligence briefing of the seventies - the Komsomol, the young communist league, inside of Russia, was rebranding the McCarthyIte Rhetoric of the fifties, and trying to STOP the onslaught of Blue Jeans lead Sex, Drugs, Rock and Roll which the Nixonites were using to DESTROY the Moral Fibre of good Comrade Party Members!!! Which as you may well recall, lead to the TOTALLY SHOCKING departure from reality, when "Soviet Life" - the Russian Embassy's "reader's digest" rag, which, yes, almost always had a story about how some "comrade lassie" had saved someone from the Collective Farm - was so REVISIONIST as to actually publish the photographs that everyone knew, and the one's were non-persons such as Trotsky showed up. In a few years after that, the berlin wall fell - and the five army group in Germany was out pan handling bus fare back to mother russia.
So you need to start from the premise of which end are you trying to achieve?
The current Bush administration has done a lovely job of keeping the North Koreans motivated, so that when all else fails in their domestic and foreign policy 'agenda like products' - there can be these massive panics about the Threat that the North Korean Flying Saucer Technology could be the REAL Iranian Flying Saucer Technology that all americans are suppose to be fearful will return. Go back and review how the recent round of AngstFestivalIsing cost the Administration Squat! Save that in the middle of the Dong 2 Media Festival the VP had to step in and reassure everyone that all was still well in america because of the Great Successes Of Great Leader!!!
Now, if one were interested in actually solving the problem of how to deal with things like nuclear technology, and co-ercive politicts.... that is not something that one can do by paying a few Media Pundits to scream and rant about the ThreatOfTheDay.
