Wow. In Massachusetts, if you want to adopt a dog from a shelter, it's a $200 fee, no "markdowns". Also you need to show proof that you own a house, or you need a written addition to your lease to prove that your landlord will allow a dog. And if you go through the Animal Rescue League, you have to sign this form saying that someone from the Dog Police can visit your house at any time to make sure that you are providing suitable conditions for your dog.

That's why I ended up getting Buddy off craigslist.

I know that they're just trying to make sure that all of their dogs are guaranteed to go to a good home, but I think they're so strict that dogs that could have been adopted by nice people sometimes end up put to sleep instead.

If you end up getting Neurosis (doesn't sound that good when you call it out...), I have one tip- take him for a walk at the shelter and see how he does. Then, when you take him home, the VERY FIRST THING you should do is take him for a long walk- even before you go into the house. It's what I did with Buddy and I think it worked wonders. He knew immediately that I was The Mom over all my roommates. Walking triggers this primordial response in dogs to recognize who is the lead dog.

And get him! I hesitated when I got Jesus the dog, and he wasn't there anymore by the time I showed up :(

That's really good advice! Mike says it's a bad time to get a dog, and I know he is right. What a neat dog, though. I'll keep your advice in mind for when it is time to get a dog, which should be by next fall.
