"Ton, please come with us? You're father and I-"
"No, mom. I have this experiment running and I'm so close to figuring it out!"
"But sweetie, we hardly see you any more, and this is one of your favourite-"
"Mom, I can't. This is a huge discovery, if I'm right. The first time I did it, it was a fluke, but if it can be duplicated..." Ton sighed. "Mom, I've been dreaming of something like this forever."
The pained look on Mrs. Phanan's face persisted only until her son finally turned to look at her. It melted into a genuinely happy smile. She would move galaxies for her son. Too bad he didn't realize it. "Okay, sweetie. I understand. We'll tell you all about the Opera when we get back."
"Mmhmm." He had already turned back to his science toys. "See you."
With a sad smile, Mrs. Phanan blew her son a kiss he didn't see and gently closed the door. Yes, it was too bad that he didn't know how much his mother loved him.
It was also too bad that he didn't know it was the last time he'd see her alive. If he did, then maybe he would have gotten up to give her a hug, tell her how much he loved her. Or maybe he would have begged them to stay home and they could watch a holo-vid. Or maybe, just maybe, he would have gone with them that night.
