I put a stem extension on my bicycle to see if that made riding it more tolerable, and it did! I rode it down to the store in the rain, and it was so comfortable that I was able to get to that point where you kinda' forget about the bicycle and take in everything around you...which is much safer. Before the extension I had to constantly change positions to avoid fatigue - even during general riding. The new position isn't quite as upright as the old Dahon, but now it's a hybrid mountain/road bike position, which is ideal for my casual riding style.
I realize that if anyone read this journal, which they don't, they would think that all I do is bike, when really I don't bike very often at all. But I WANT to. If I could limit my car use to only trips that required Rachel's wheelchair or musical equipment, I'd be more satisfied with my life. But for now, anything more than three miles away is too far without a day to plan ahead.

I've added a generic rack, the stem extension and LL Bean grocery panniers (that glow like construction worker vests for safety).
