Hey! Most people who might read this inconsistent blog probably don't know that when I was in graduate school at the University of Rhode Island, I had a radio show (roughly from 1994 - 1997) on the campus radio station WRIU. My show was called "The Too Drunk to Care Show" and I played lots of techno, mixing it together with various rock and spoken word recordings that I collected. It was a pretty crazy show, and since my time slots were always after 10pm, the FCC "risque" rules were relaxed, so I could get away with playing things like Frank Zappa and The Lords of Acid.
One of the perks of taking a job at Western New England College was that they also have a radio station,
WNEK 150.1 FM. Unlike WRIU, which could be heard over the entire state of Rhode Island, WNEK can only be heard within a 5 mile radius of the Western New England College campus (and no, that's not equivalent to the entire state of Rhode Island). But I signed on for a radio show at WNEK this past September because I always thought DJ-ing was fun, even if only 0-3 people were listening.
Because of my status as an actual professor, though, I changed the name of my show to "Airwave Anarchy." I still play a lot of electronic dance music, mostly
EBM and
Darkwave, but still with various spoken word, children's stories, and other random things mixed in. However, computer-aided mixing (so far my favorite of such software is
D-Jay) makes some things so easy that I try to do more (and have a greater probability of success with)
mash-ups. Also, my show is on Tuesday afternoons from 2-4pm, during which the full FCC rules are in effect, so Ihave to be more careful about bad words and obscenities creeping into what I play.
In any case, the reason why I'm posting this is that starting this week WNEK 105.1 FM (in Springfield, MA) will be streaming their broadcasts on the web! Therefore anyone who cares and can manage to listen to my show may do so.
When: Every Tuesday from 2-4pm.
Where:
http://www1.wnec.edu/wnekstreaming/ (There's also a link there that is iTunes-savvy.)
I have no clue how well this streaming site will work. Various features like "Now on the air:" and "Recently played:" do not work at all. But the streaming seems to work, at least for now. Currently this is all in the "cobbled-together" stage (for instance, right now the WNEK web page makes no mention of this web-streaming news). But hopefully if you choose to tune in to my show you'll have success. (And if you do, there are various ways to make requests, like by IM-ing "wnek1051fm" on AIM.) I'll probably also try to post on Facebook when my show is on, so I could also take requests that way too.
And if you do listen in, please give me feedback!
