A step closer to resolving a mystery of my 3x great grandfather's Civil War service, specifically why he was transferred from his line regiment to the VRC:
according to List of Pensioners on the Rolls as of January 1,1883: a William H White of Cambridgeport had been receiving an $8 a month pension since 12 Oct 1880 for an abdominal injury.
problem: I have a death notice and a death registration showing him dying in Charlestown 19 Jan 1883; OTOH the column header is "Post Office". consult Cambridge and Charlestown directories for 1882/3; is his widow drawing the pension under the same claim number?
