Tom hates clocks - and watches and sundials - and all time-telling devices. Those that tick - like the one in Mrs Cole's office - are the worst. This is because Tom hates time itself - and its infuriatingly incessant habit of passing - continually passing - disappearing in seconds - hours - days - years - closer and closer to the day he'll die - and be - forever - out of time.
Time is precious - Tom was told - and he hates it all the more for that. The grains of sand are running out faster - his eighth birthday comes and goes - slipping away and he's terrified.
