the not good enough for the bk blog entry

This would have gone here if it had been more "tabloid" and less "I'm a foreigner!"

Eh.

Nokia Launch Party

Last night I attended the launch of the new Nokia N95 phone at The Dome, State Tower with Champ, another writer at BK.

After getting up to the top floor we discovered that we were quite underdressed (though I was later told by another photographer that this was okay because I’m a foreigner, Champ, however, was out of luck).

There were quite a few people, and some of them were apparently famous enough to warrant crowds of photographers gathering around them to take photos. I, of course, had no idea who any of them were.

But taking photos of celebrities (or even photos of people taking photos of celebrities) was not the reason we came to this event. We came for the phone. The question was: Where was the phone?

Spread throughout the blue and purple-lit crowd were a number of fancy looking pedestals that had been designed to hold display phones, but currently weren’t. Also present were a number of display areas featuring laptops, printers, and fold-up keyboards that could be used with the phone, but no actual phones.

Had we perhaps (hopefully!) been given a phone in this weird sewn shut bag we had received along with our press kit? It was sort of phone shaped… With some deft MacGyverish maneuvers involving a pen, we soon had it open. Only to discover it contained a monoscope.

So Champ and I stood around waiting for things to get started. We pondered just what exactly was in the hors d’oeuvres (few around us seemed brave enough to try the brown stuff in the spoons), played with the monoscope (it’s actually pretty cool), enjoyed the music the DJ spun, were amused by the tv show hosts who were smiling and happy looking when on camera, and rather dour when off, and joined the other photographers in taking photos of stuff.

Eventually the wine (and beer) started flowing and the presentation began. I didn’t really pay attention, mostly because it was in Thai, but I wasn’t alone in doing this. Champ said that some of the people talking were minor celebrities and had gotten to the event using the GPS function on the phone. Smart enough, but we managed to find the place with just the address.

Soon a space was cleared between the crowd and models started parading up and down the length of the room, pausing only long enough to demonstrate the uses of the phone. In between taking photos I couldn’t help laughing at the ridiculousness of it all.

After the models had finished strutting their stuff, we were finally able to actually check out the phones (and take photos of different models in shiny dresses holding the phones). They seemed cool, though none of them were on a network, so you didn’t seem to be able check the internet or GPS functions.

Eventually I headed off, but not before getting a photo of myself and some of the models printed and doing a quick interview.

Me: Are you bored?
Models: Yes.

Watch BK for a full review of the Nokia N95 soon.
