[ CCS, Glee, GR, Little Mermaid, Simpsons, Southland ]

SHARING TIME:
ღ - I have decided something important. I will still catch up on Glee sometime (because I promised myself), but after that? I am disowing this fucking show. And flinging myself into the fic and treating it like it's based on a separate source canon. A source canon that doesn't make me want to punch everyone in the face. It'll be awesome! Because, fuck you, Glee, you are not taking my joy at reading fucktons of Puck/Rachel fic away from me, I refuse to let you!
ღ - Sigh. For awhile the Bleach wank was funny, now it's just getting kind of tired and I'm getting cranky at fandom. Someone should ply me with fic and art to cheer me up. :|b

AND ONTO THE RECS:
    Cardcaptor Sakura - 2 Fanfics
    Glee - 2 Fanfics
    Junjou Romantica - 4 Fanfics
The Little Mermaid - 1 Fanfic
    The Simpsons - 2 Fanfics
    Southland - 3 Fanfics

Cardcaptor Sakura: A Presence Within by Chisis - Okay, this was really adorable. Syaoran, minding his own business, being the serious-faced kind of guy he is, suddenly senses a presence in the house that he's not sure about, instantly suspicious. It's a bit obvious where the story is going, but that's not the point of it--instead, the charm is in Syaoran's totally adorable reactions and the sweet (without being too sugary) interaction with Sakura he has, when he tries to protect her from whatever new prensence is in the house. Awww. ♥ (Syaoran/Sakura.)

Cardcaptor Sakura: Scattered Blossoms by Peacewish - So, having gotten a new handheld to read fic on and combining that with a renewed love for CCS, I finally decided to tackle one of those fics that I've been meaning to read forever now. It's just over 100,000 words and I read it all in a couple of days and hardly even noticed the time passing because the author's writing is very, very polished. I can't say I see the same Touya as she does, that I agree with the (admittedly pre-series) characterization for him (or Fujitaka and the dynamic between Touya - Sakura and Touya - Fujitaka) or the voice he had, and I found the writing over the top in several places, but I don't mean for this to be a backhanded rec. I seriously ate up every single word of this fic in a really short time, I kept picking it back up because I couldn't put it down. As a story, it's incredibly well-paced and emotionally satisfying, very professional in how the entire thing was put together.
While it reads a bit more like original fic than CCS fic, it's also... hm, how to put this? Touya is my favorite character, so I gravitate towards anything with him in it and I found that this was definitely one of the more fun stories to read about him. I would read it again in a heartbeat, I would pick up more Touya fic from this author, etc. And one of the best things is that the author sucked me into his journey here, the anger he has after the loss of his mother, the distance he feels from his family, the frustration at being asked to grow up too quickly, the tension with his father and his sister--it was impossible not to get sucked into it because the author is truly talented. It's also a really interesting take on the Touya/Kaho relationship pre-series and that's one of my favorite, especially because her role in his life was so important and affected him so deeply. You can really feel that come through in the writing. (Touya/Kaho, other implications of future canon, it's also a character piece.)

Glee: inscrutable by bossymarmalade - This was very short but it has, once again, fueled my interest in the idea of Mike/Tina because it's charming and adorable and everything I wanted it to be. Up to and including the fantastic first line: The really stupid thing is that they hold off for so long, because they don't want it to look like of course the two asian kids would get together. I really wish this had been longer because I love what the author did with them and how well she wrote them, but this piece was fantastic the way it was. (Mike/Tina.)

Glee: easy as one-two-three by hardlygolden - Somehow I managed to miss this one last Yuletide and, randomly, I was in the mood for Puck/Rachel fic today and managed to stumble over this one again. And, having recently decided to tell the actual show to go screw itself and I'm just going to dive back into the delicious Puck/Rachel fic, I decided to give it a read. And, man, this is why I should have never left the fandom! I totally laughed my way through this entire thing because it's just so... so... them somehow, that Puck would say he couldn't read this, gesturing to a sheet of music, and Rachel would take it all the wrong way and it would somehow end up being kind of adorable. And hilarious. So, so hilarious. (Puck/Rachel.)

Junjou Romantica: Want by Faye-Naruse - This is kind of ridiculously adorable and... well. Because it's Hiroki, I can rather easily believe that he would react this way to being turned on by Nowaki, just from talking to him and watching him, that he would accuse Nowaki of having done something to him. Because he's Hiroki. And I really love him ridiculously, but just as much... I love Nowaki for being so sweet and so open and so honest about his feelings, for being there with Hiroki in a way that works with a character like that. It's charming and a very nice image, I have to say. (Nowaki/Hiroki, NSFW.)

Junjou Romantica: Your softness beckons me by deecherrywolf - Sometimes I just want a good Nowaki POV fic. Sometimes I just want Egoist to make out already. And sometimes I get a fic that combines both! What I really appreciate about a fic like this is how much you can really feel how ridiculously gone on Hiroki he is, how much Nowaki is just completely and utterly in love with every little thing about him, that there's a sort of gentle quality (even over everything else that makes up Nowaki) to the way he thinks about Hiro-san that just really worked for me today. (Nowaki/Hiroki, NC-17.)

Junjou Romantica: So Far Away by deecherrywolf - You know what I'm still not tired of? The idea that Hiroki got around a lot when pining for someone else, that he would do the same thing while Nowaki was off in America and he had no idea about whether or not Nowaki was coming back. It's just three short scenes, but it's a glimpse into the way Hiroki deals with his problems (and also has some rather nicely written porn, which I appreciated a lot) and I can't help being that fangirl about the random guys he sleeps with because he's crushed without Nowaki. ....shut up. (OCs/Hiroki, implied Nowaki/Hiroki, NC-17.)

Junjou Romantica: Leave No Page Unturned by Faye-Naruse - A short piece about Hiroki and Akihiko in highschool, finding out which classes each of them are assigned to, in which (as the summary says), Hiroki cares too much and Akihiko doesn't care much at all. What I adore about this fic is that, even in just this one quiet moment, it's not really anybody's fault, you can't really blame anyone, and it's not like they're not both important to each other. And yet it's still bittersweet to see this, even as lovely as it is. (One sided Akihiko <-- Hiroki, implications of future Akihiko/Takahiro one-sidedness.)

The LIttle Mermaid: But It Is Not Right by Steve Zissou - This is a really interesting piece about Eric and when he was engaged to Vanessa, the way that nagging feeling of something being not right warring with the fever-like feeling of the spell he's under. It's not a long piece, but it's not something I've seen done a lot, what he must have been going through during that time, and it's a very intriguing piece for it. (Implied Eric/Ariel and Eric/Vanessa.)

The Simpsons: What Remains by geonncannon - So, I have a thing for The Simpsons fic, which isn't something I actively seek out, but every so often, I'll stumble over just the right piece on a particular meme. And, well. How was I supposed to resist a Simpsons/Supernatural fusion? Honestly, I don't want to meet the person who isn't at least a little bit tempted by that! And this piece was amazing, with Bart and Lisa as the kids who lost their mother and, in some ways, their father, as Homer is a changed man, and they have to fend for themselves a lot now and Lisa is steadily growing more... well, something. The contrast between what they used to be and what they are now is beautifully done and what I wouldn't give for more of this. (No warnings/pairings.)

The Simpsons: i recognize that girl by bossymarmalade - More fic on The Simpsons! The focus is on Lisa and Maggie this time, especially Lisa wanting a sister to do things with, the way she tries so hard (in a very Lisa-like way) to bring them closer, but it never quite works. I love the details of this, the way it's so very The Simpsons, the whole entire family, so easy to see this set a few years down the road. Bart and Lisa as teenagers, Maggie as the younger sister, and the way it's not quite what she expected, even the references to Millhouse or Homer in the background, the dialogue, all of it is just perfection. (No warnings/pairings.)

Southland: Ache is Hiding, Hoping by breakthecitysky - So, having mainlined Southland over the last couple of days, I am doing my best to dive into the fandom. I pretty much started clicking at random on southland_fic, stumbling over this one by chance, but it's a really good fic that got me started in the way that it's a quick piece about the start of a relationship with John and Ben and yet still manages to keep that sense of intensity and roughness that the show has. ....shit, I'm explaining this badly. But it's a good fic that got me started and made me want more pretty much immediately. (John/Ben.)

Southland: Protective Custody by sam-storyteller - This is a short little story, but it doesn't need to be longer than it is to accomplish its goal--a look into John Cooper and how he likes saving people. And I can see this, especially because it's something good while not being entirely pure, it's rather gray. Which is entirely fitting for a series like Southland, which isn't afraid to turn those gray shades onto their main characters--especially in a fic about Ben getting injured on the job and his father trying to see him in the hospital, which John doesn't take well to. (No real warnings/pairings.)

Southland: Son is on a Midnight Run like DeNiro by hackthis - [ part 01 - part 02 - part 03 - part 04 ] - I honestly don't even know where to start with this fic. It's not quite 40,000 words of John Cooper and Ben Sherman and whatever it is between them that's partnership and relationship and sex and issues and... I don't even know how to describe it. It's amazingly well-written, the kind of fic that left me satisfied after I sat down and read the whole thing in pretty much one sitting, despite that I'm also left with the feeling of wanting to go out and do it all over again, even knowing that the fandom isn't big enough to find another one like this. It's everything it needed to be, including funny in all the right places, super hot sex scenes in all the right places, and fucked up in all the right places.
The writing of this is fantastic and it gets into everything that reminds me of why I became so fascinated with John Cooper in the first place, the narrative here just sucked me right in and wouldn't let me go the entire time. The balance between him being a good guy, but also someone who has a lot of gray shades, is maintained beautifully here--he has rough edges and he's intense when he's angry and it's not always nice, but he's also fundamentally a good guy. The author breathes life into every scene she writes, the little details of both John and Ben's lives, the little touches in their developing relationship, how it's not just about sex, yet that's very much a part of it as well.
....shit, I'm saying all of this really badly and I wanted to write a good rec for this one because I'm pretty sure it's going to be the highlight of the fandom. But it kind of destroyed my ability to be coherent with how much it hit that itch I needed scratching in this fandom. In a sense, it's probably ruined the rest of fandom for me. But, mostly... I can live with the fandom now, for having given me this one truly satisfying fic. ....christ, this was a terrible rec. Just go read the fic. (John/Ben, NC-17.)
