Criminal Minds:
An Echo by imogenedisease - Sigh. Okay. I really sat on the fence about whether or not I wanted to recommend Criminal Minds fics, because I was kind of on the fence about whether or not I wanted to actually ship anything or not, especially with my pairing of choice clashing against my usual feelings on these sorts of things. But I quietly read fic anyway. And then I came across a few stories that just... made me cave, this being one of them. It's a series of short ficlets that all make up one longer story, a sort of simple story that's not really about plot (such as it is, Reid has a bit of a bad night, he goes home with Gideon, they both just sort of fall into things) so much as it's about creating an atmosphere, to my mind. The writing was lovely and the characterization felt right on to me, the kind that could take me from sort of passively shipping it to actively shipping it. I wanted to be convinced, of course, but this fic did a lovely job of easing me over. (Gideon/Reid.)
Criminal Minds:
Darkness and Light by Rushlight - Well. As long as I was caving on starting to read Criminal Minds fic, as long as I was caving into sort of actively shipping this pairing, I might as well go for the slightly longer, more plot-oriented fic. And I would have thought that I'd dislike this kind of fic, where Reid gets captured by a criminal and is battered and bruised for it, but the show itself kind of loves doing that, is kind of already like h/c fic come to the screen, so this didn't feel like a very big leap. And I really did love the plotting of this, the case side of things and what Reid goes through and how he actually uses his skills as a profiler to make his way through this situation, how the team profiles and chases after the criminal, it was satisfying for all of that. To the point that the relationship between Gideon and Reid was almost secondary to why I was reading this fic. ♥ ....but I'm still not going to complain about the satisfactory ending with them, either. :D (Gideon/Reid, R-rating.)
Criminal Minds:
Transition, Transference, Metamorphosis by buffyaddict13 - So, I was crabbing to Anita about having fallen into this fandom and she linked me to this fic, saying it was one of her favorites. And a;lsdkfjaslkj it's a really breathtaking look at Spencer Reid throughout his life, the writing and little touches are beautifully done. It hooked me right from the beginning with little Spencer and the scene with his father to his time at school to his work at the BAU, it's these little scenes that highlight so much of his life. It's not an easy fic to read, but it's not supposed to be and it's not over the top, the painful memories are almost delicately done so that it feels right with the character. The final scene with Gideon was the perfect way to end it as well, the dynamic between them almost what I want more than pairing them, it was just... the author hit every note right. *__* (No warnings/pairings.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN!:
Worth by starkissed - So. My interest in Hibari with pretty much anyone leads me down a strange path again. But how was I to resist the call of Hibari and Kyouko? It was too off the wall for me to even pretend I wasn't curious. And I'm really glad I did because somehow the author really makes this work, she has a great grasp on both their characters, making this AU really easy to see, how Kyouko's just a little bit different here, but still so recognizable. I love the dynamic between her and Hibari here, I love the laid-back cheerful way she has around him, the way he doesn't say much but doesn't hate her presence. The writing is lovely and makes this piece just work. (This is gen, but could be sort of Hibari/Kyouko?)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN!:
Caring by starkissed - This is the second Hibari/Kyouko fic on this post (I'm recommending them separately for the usual reasons I do that) and I like that it's moving slightly more towards pairing, but could still almost be gen. I like that it's the same lovely writing full of laid-back cheerfulness and gentle teasing and Hibari being annoyed but not shoving her away, I like how well they continue to work in this author's hands. I would have thought that Hibari being a smoker like this wouldn't work for me and yet... the author makes that work for me as well. <3 (This sort of skirts the edge between gen and Hibari/Kyouko, I think?)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN!:
Intermission by starkissed - This fic does stand on its own nicely, you don't really need to know anything to read it, but I think it would help to have read the previous two fics on the post before you do, since they sort of get the reader accostomed to this different characterization of Kyouko. She's more forceful here, harder and more sharp-edged, but I continue to really adore this AU take on her character and the relationship she has with Hibari, how easy it is, how they don't chain each other down, how there's a sort of delicate quality to it. ....that made sense in my head, shut up. Anyway, it's a lovely series of fics, I adored each of them, this one being no exception. (Hibari/Kyouko.)
Star Trek XI:
In Service by Raven - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] I continue to love that authors sometimes write character match ups that I wouldn't really give much thought to--like McCoy and Scotty, off on a series of missions to various planets--and then write these breathtaking stories about them. The writing is gorgeous, it weaves together a really interesting story in the various worlds they visit together with some really beautiful character insights to both of them. I love the way both Scotty and McCoy just sort of let each other be, rough edges and all, I love McCoy's point of view in this, and I love how... vast this author's background world seems. The different planets they visit, the little details, the little touches that make each of them come alive, it's beautifully done. It's one of those must-read fics from the fandom for me. (No warnings/pairings.)
Star Trek XI:
The Enterprise Laundry Room by chaletian - [Note: Just go ahead and assume there are spoilers in the fic and this rec.] I love slice of life fics, I love the exploring of different points of view on the characters, I love the little details that you wouldn't normally think of on an epic ship like the Enterprise, I love the sense of how human all of this is. I love that this is a piece about the laundry room set through an OC's eyes, I love that it just made me smile the whole way through. (No warnings/pairings.)
D.Gray-man Doujinshi (scanslated) -
LIMIT - I suspect that this doujinshi is one that you have to be a fan of Kanda/Allen already to enjoy, you'll probably have to like the idea already before going in for this to work for you. And it is doujinshi, but... well, as much as I'm sliding over to the het side of things with DGM, I do still enjoy this pairing. And I always enjoy prickly Kanda and he was the best part of this doujin for me--he obviously has feelings, he doesn't really deny that so much as he's genuinely setting them aside and not getting hung up on them, but neither does he ignore them. It's... ehh, I'm explaining this badly, but I did like the way he was written in this one and that made me enjoy this book. :D (Kanda/Allen, somewhere around an R rating, but pretty NSFW.)
Final Fantasy XII Doujinshi (scanslated) -
Sky Regrus - I was browsing Baka-Updates for new releases and happened to see this one was posted this morning and it was Balthier and Fran doujinshi, you have no idea how fast I zipped over to snag it. (You can find a download link on
this page, I believe, if it's not on the direct listing.) And it's a gorgeous book, it's all about the artist's take on how Balthier and Fran first met and it's sweet without being too fluffy, and the art is recognizable yet also has this really softened feel to it that works so well. I love that it's all about the connection between them, that it's set from Fran's point of view and does a lovely job with her thoughts on being out in the world, yet doesn't neglect Balthier and his delightful attitude towards everything. I love that it skirts the edged of friendship and romance, it could really tip either way (though, I think the attraction is implied, given some of the splash art) and is just a really heart-warming, wonderful story. I adored this so, so much. ♥ (This could be Balthier/Fran, it could be gen. The story itself is pretty gen, though.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (raw) -
Aruiwa, Soresaemo Real na Hibi - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm should be pretty easily joinable.] This artist's style probably still isn't going to be for everyone, it's very... solid, rather than the usual delicate style. The lines are heavy and it's also a simple style, but I've seen a few of the artist's books before and her style has really grown on me. There are some really nice panels of action, then a really hot kiss up against the rooftop walls, and the occasional nice sidelong glance from Hibari. It's still a simple doujin, but I really enjoyed picking this one up tonight. <3 (Yamamoto/Hibari.)
Katekyou Hitman REBORN! Doujinshi (scanslated) -
CACHE-CACHE - [Note: This post is locked, but the comm is freely joinable.] Oh, the art of this one is really lovely. Dino especially is super hot in this doujinshi, the panels of him in the closet were kind of beautifully done. Plus, this doujinshi has Dino and Hibari having sex in a closet, I just. I love that kind of thing, I am not ashamed to be that fangirl about it. :D It's a simple little story, Dino's hiding from his family, Hibari finds him, they make out in a closet, and then it ends on a totally lolarious note. Toss in some really beautiful art and some great Hibari faces and Hibird being awesome, and it's a fun little doujinshi that I'm glad to have read today. ♥ (Dino/Hibari.)
Naruto Doujinshi (scanslated) -
Guruguru guruguru - This is... as;dlkj I don't even know how to describe this book. It's a series of shorter stories that are all completely on crack and they're very... well, doujinshi-esque, but surprisingly PG about it, just. Well, you'll probably like it if you're looking for something silly and goofy, something where Kakashi is a freak and Iruka is driven up the wall by pretty much the entire world. The art is solid and surprisingly detailed, but mostly I read this for the fun of it, the gag stories were amusing and I enjoyed it a lot. ♥ (Kakashi/Iruka.)
Naruto Doujinshi (scanslated) -
Will of Flames - This doujinshi is actually two stories, the first one is set just after the Third Hokage died and it's about Iruka's loss and his memories of the Third Hokage and the way he looks around at the other people at the funeral and their losses, too. It's a bittersweet, sort of simple story that created a nice little atmosphere and was an interesting read. I have to admit, sometimes it's nice to read something about just Iruka that's not about Kakashi at all. Except I do still like the KakaIru, so the second story being a more traditional piece where it snows and they go out to have a snowball fight and then makeouts, while Kakashi deliberately acts like a freak and Iruka hates the world (except not really) and I just. I still totally eat that kind of thing up. The art is cute, but does err on the simple side--it works pretty well for the stories this book is telling, though. I enjoyed it. (Kakashi/Iruka, maybe PG-13 or so.)

Pokemon - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Wow, some of the illustrations on this site are just incredible. There's an amazing amount of art here considering how beautifully done some of the illustrations are, they're just detailed and really rich with colors and details and I felt like I could spend hours on this site alone. I love the artist's style, they seemed to have taken ages on each and every single image on the site and I'd be hard-pressed to pick out a favorite out of everything here. Well, okay. I lie a little. The Vapreon image was kind of totally gorgeous and really sticks out in my mind. Though, it was hard to choose because the range of backgrounds and themes to so many images was really impressive! And just. At this point, I've seen a lot of Pokemon art sites, but I think this is still easily one of the best in the fandom that I've seen, some of these images are just gorgeous. This site hit me perfectly, I can't flail enough. ♥ You'll want to keep poking around, there's more than one place to look on this site, btw. (No warnings/pairings.)

Pokemon - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I KNEW it was only a matter of time before I finally stumbled over Pokemon gijinka art and Japan almost never disappoints. o/ So, the site was worth it for that novelty alone, but I actually really did like the art here, it's a bit sketch-esque, but the artist has really clean, smooth lines that look very nice. I even really enjoyed the art of the various trainers, the artist's use of color occasionally was slick and shiny, which I am totally weak to. So, novelty + pretty colors = me totally being happy with a site. :D (No warnings/pairings.)
-
Pokemon - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I sort of sat on the fence with this site for awhile and I'm not sure if it will appeal to everyone, but... idk, there was something about it that just kept me going. It was cute. And the artist had some really bright, vivid uses of colors to the sketches sometimes, I'm weak to little things like that. Plus, the art was adorable and there was a fair amount focused on the pokemon themselves and sometimes that's really all I need. :D (No warnings/pairings.)
-
Pokemon - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - SIGH. Still not done with Pokemon art sites yet, apparently. Except I can't help it when the art is as pretty as it is on this site! It's based on Diamond/Pearl/Platinum, so I recognize most of the characters, which wins me over faster despite that I'm usually more about the pokemon themselves. The lines are really solid on this artist's work, the colors are bright, and they do some great group images. This was also the site that kind of made me realize I was slowly starting to like Volkner because of all the awesome fanart I'd seen of him across several sites. And, hell, even the log art is awesome with this site, it's so bright and cheerful and cute, just the way it should be. ♥ (Some pairings, but none consistent enough to label.)
-
Pokemon - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - This site took me awhile to decide on, I spent awhile on the fence because it was occasionally really pretty and then occasionally sometimes very messy doodles and sketches. I think what ultimately won me over, though, was that the artist had a ton of potential and there's a nice focus on the various forms of Eevees and I'm weak, okay. :| Overall, the site is solid and entertained me while I was there, there were several illustrations that I thought were fantastic, especially of the pokemon themselves. I was amused by a lot of the character designs the artist used and the colors were super pretty. All of these things are plenty enough to win me over to a site. <3 (No warnings/pairings.)
-
Pokemon - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I was pretty sure that I was going to love this site from the moment I first stepped onto it because I totally love the main page's layout, it just looks shiny and slick. But I didn't expect how much art there was to be found here because, holy crap, that was a lot of images in the gallery. *__* I like to open everything in a new tab in a gallery then go tabbing through them all and al;sdkjfalskj I swear I thought this site was going to crash my browser. Now, if you're not crazy like me and don't open a hundred tabs at once, the site will be just fine and the art is SO FREAKING CUTE sometimes and then REALLY PRETTY at other times and I love the way this artist draws the pokemon and this is seriously one of the biggest sites I've seen yet and just. Keyboard mashing and an urge to go look at a hundred more Pokemon sites today, that's how I feel after this one. ♥ (No warnings/pairings.)
-
Pokemon - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I don't know if this site is going to be for everyone, the art is mostly in small little pieces, but it kind of won me over really fast with the artist's style. She draws these great little mini poster-style almost watercolor esque (...sort of, I guess? idk) colors or cg style soft colors that I just totally ate up. Even with the doodles and log art, everything was just so damn cute that I loved all of it! Not to mention that there's a great selection of the various pokemon, which totally fed into my need for a fix of them, and it's just... a solid, cute little site that made a fun stop this morning. ♥ (No warnings/pairings.)
