ARASHI: untitled by rhythmia - I beamed horribly throughout this fic pretty much because it's Aiba, Nino, and Jun. Done just the way I like it, too! The fic really captures what makes the Aiba/Nino relationship gold--they are giggly little bastards who feed off each other and delight in causing chaos for their bandmates. I especially loved Aiba's characterization--playful and cheerful, but there's more serious thoughts underneath it as well. And Jun is such a great victim for their plotting, yet you can tell how much he loves them in his own way and it's just. This was fun and sparkled and reminds me of why I pine for more of this threesome, too. ♥ (Aiba/Nino/Jun.)
ARASHI: untitled by Honooko - I spent the last day driving myself kind of batshit crazy trying to remember where I'd read this fic, all I could remember was one little detail of it and I couldn't find it on my flist anywhere. It was driving me crazy because I knew I wanted to reread the awesomeness of it. And then I was randomly browsing the flist, stumbled over the fic again and asdl;kfjaslkj just as great as I remembered. It's a short little ficlet, but it's Aiba/Jun bathtub porn and it's delightfully IC and I love it and I love the ending kind of a lot and just. Yes, this is what fandom should be. ♥ (Aiba/Jun, not entirely SFW.)
Fringe: Plus ça change by Zinnith - I'm sort of wary of trying to find Fringe fic in the great wilds of fandom because I like the show, but not enough to seek out and wade through the crap to find the gems. But I stumbled over this fic and was curious enough to read it and it's. It's one of those little scenes that feels perfect to the characters, like it could so easily slip between the frames of canon, and touches on the dysfunctional father/son relationship between the Bishops. It's bittersweet without being too much, it hit all the right notes, just a perfect little extra set of scenes that go hand in hand with canon. I almost don't need any other fic for the fandom now. (No warnings/pairings.)
Kamen Rider Kabuto: Happy Summer Wedding by Meg - [Note: This is all three parts combined together, so you may want to skip to the new stuff. This rec will mostly focus on the third part of the fic, since the previous two have been recommended already.] There are certain things that just need to happen in fandom and certain things you never get tired of. One of my favorites is Gatack being a vicious little motherfucker who is batshit crazy and I could read about that forever. Meg uses it to especially good effect in this fic, I don't think I stopped grinning the entire time any given Zecter was on the screen, and then she wound it together with Tendou having to talk about his ~*feelings*~ (also awesome) despite that he'd rather gnaw off his own leg rather than voluntarily talk about them (feelings belong in a tiny little knot in your stomach where you don't have to deal with them, not out in the open where you can resolve them, gross) and Kagami being awesome and sensible and strong and having his head on straight and yet still making awesome headache faces. Because their relationship is fantastic here, all the crazy and all the issues and all the reasons why it still somehow works. *loves* Also, having Kagami Riku's involvement in the fic (and the way he was/wasn't involved) was just that much more satisfying, because I love that it's not anger at him so much as distance and it fits perfectly with where they were after everything that went down. (Kagami/Tendou.)
Kamen Rider Kabuto: The Devil and the Deep Blue Sea by Icka! M. Chif - You know what I love? When people make other people write fic for DW codes. Everyone wins that way. And this was an interesting, neat take on Kagami's character and the circumstances he finds himself surrounded by/caught between. Gatack and Tendou and the Worm and all of these things are incredibly difficult to deal with and it can be a bit much sometimes, all of them take so much out of a person. And I like that the author balanced Kagami being a normal person in these abnormal circumstances and how it's overwhelming sometimes, but also that Kagami always finds his way through and holds things together in that way he has. I really liked how sharp everything was in this piece, how much it kind of almost hurt a little to read. (Kagami/Tendou.)
VOICE: A Threesome in Four Acts by Circe - Oh, jesus christ, Circe is going to ruin me for this fandom or pretty much any other fandom ever. I'm not sure I can really even talk about why this fic got me so hard, other than to say it is everything that engrossed me with these characters, everything that made me laugh about them and everything that made me love them. It's a brilliantly balanced threesome fic with Hanei, Ryousuke, and Teppei, where each scene is deftly crafted to show a different side of the relationship or to connect to the events that shaped them in the series or just to be so funny that my face literally hurt from the giggle fit I found myself in. The insights into the characters are amazing and it's so damn entertaining and everything about it is just-- it's perfect. This is everything I ever wanted out of the fandom, so much so that I can't really even talk about it because I just start making vague flaily hand motions and squeaking noises. I can't pick a favorite scene or a favorite character or anything because each one of them was perfect. Just... asl;dkfja;lskjdalkjsl;kj!!! ♥♥♥ (Hanei/Ryousuke/Teppei.)
VOICE: untitled by Circe - You know what? Every time I think I can't love Circe more, she comes back with something like this. Because this is both insightful to the characters/awesome for the characters and also TOTAL FUCKING LOL. It helps to understand the context of the conversation re: the episode discussion, but really all you need to know is that Hanei's mom is awesome and you know she and Hanei's dad are totally like teenagers. And I just. She nails the OT5 dynamic, she nails Hanei's relationship with his mom, she nails Daiki's weirdness, she nails Hanei's mom's awesomeness, and wraps all of that up in the best comedic timing in the final scene that I've seen in a long while. Seriously, it flourished into my mind's eye and every time I read it, I shriek with laughter all over again. God, I love her so much I can hardly stand it. (No real warnings/pairings.)
Weiss Kreuz: untitled by ingenius_inc - Every so often I come across a WK fic that catches my interest and I saw Crawford/Schuldich and NC-17 on this one and had to click. It's a short ficlet, but it's a fun little one that's not quite nice, but shows what a functional dysfunctional relationship they have. I-- I kind of really loved this portrayal of Schuldich and the hints of smut were very nice. *__* (Crawford/Schuldich, NSFW.)
Merlin Fanvid - Let's Get It On - Triste pointed this one out and she's totally right, it's grand. What I love about it is the concept behind it, the way the song is used over the imagery of the series, all the swords and unicorn horns and maces and other weapons, so you really get the, ah, point of just how phallic this show can really be sometimes. The editing is fantastic, the lingering slow shots or just the way the show filmed something, it was just. Highlighted beautifully in this vid, it's so hilarious and... well, totally gay. XD
Okami Fanvid - Hold Me Now - [Note: There will be some degree of spoilers in this fanvid.] I picked this one up off the fandomsecrets panfandom rec meme and I don't watch a ton of Okami fanvids, but! I love this song! And the video set to it was really very nicely done, lots of action clips and totally epic fights, making sure to keep the past fast enough to match the song it used. And, as much as I liked the footage of the fight with Lechku and Nechku, it was when the fanvid got into the fight with Yami that it looked really good. It brought back all the emotion of that final fight and everything Amaterasu went through and just. a;sldkjfal;skj so damn pretty omg.
Sailor Moon Fanvid - Hold Me Now - Yes, yes, I know. I really do love this song, though, so as long as I was looking on YouTube for fanvids with it, I decided to poke around a bit more, stumbling over this one. You wouldn't think that such a simple concept--the transformation sequences in Sailor Moon set to this song--would be so effective, but they really kind of are. Maybe it's the strong association with Princess Tutu for the song (since that's such a famous fanvid) helped, but I don't think that's just it. The clips were well paced, this is a fairly fast video and it just. It worked for me. When Sailor Moon gets epic, it gets really epic and kind of intense, which this fanvid did a good job of capturing; it reminded me of all those truly epic final fights of every season. Plus, you see these transformations so many times when you watch a series like this, but this kind of made them exciting again.
- Dragon Quest V - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - You wouldn't believe how long it took me to find a site with DQV art, especially considering that there's tons and tons of it at Pixiv! Yet I could hardly find anything to properly recommend until I hit this site. There's not as much Deborah as I would have liked (I get the impression that this was more based on the original game, hence the focus on Bianca and occasionally Flora) but it has some amazingly SUPER ADORABLE stuff of the Hero and Bianca as kids or pretty Bianca art or interesting sketches set during the game's travels. Plus, oh, man, the ones of the Hero as a kid with his dad? SO ADORABLE. T__T The site does a really good job of capturing Toriyama's style without being too much of a clone of it and the lines of several of these pieces are delightful. Totally a great site if you like this game. ♥ (Mostly Hero/Bianca, some Hero/Flora, a smidge of Hero/Deborah, a lot of gen.)
- Final Fantasy Dissidia - [ Chinese (?) Fanart Site ] - Do you know what one of the best things about Dissidia fandom is? That it seems like one big excuse to make Squall's life difficult, you guys. There are several illustrations on this site that do that very thing, he makes the best "I don't know any of you" faces ever. Though, the site is primarly a Kuja site and you can tell just how much fun the artist has drawing him, which makes it fun to go through all the posts with art on them, despite that I'm not that familiar with the FFIX characters. Even if you're not that familiar with the game, it's a fun Dissidia site as well and I enjoyed it a lot. (....no real warnings, I guess.)
- Gundam 00 - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, mean, speaking of styles I'm weak to. Slick, polished CG and bright glowing colors and the cast in pretty situations? Implications of Setsuna/Marina and Allelujah/Marie, but also focusing a lot on the main cast of the Meisters? ....I am so weak to this kind of site. I originally came to the site from the artist's pixiv site, where they mostly had these really polished, fully finished illustrations but the site has a lot of sketches and doodles as well, which I liked. There's a fair amount of art here and some of it's really fantastic, there's one especially of Marie with a cat in her arms while Allelujah walks towards her and it's just. One of the prettiest things I've seen in fandom. Totally worth a look through, even if you're not that fond of the potential pairings. ♥ (Maybe some Allelujah/Tieria, Allelujah/Marie, Setsuna/Marina, but the majority of them could be gen, too.)
- Katekyou Hitman REBORN! - Out of Tune [Japanese Fanart Site ] - I'm not sure this site is going to be for everyone, I'm not even sure it would have been a site I was personally interested in, except... I dunno, the colors really caught my attention. They're the bright, vivid kind that I'm so weak to--there are times when Chrome's eye seems to practically glow right off the screen. The lineart gets really pretty good with the later illustrations as well and it's nice to find a Mukuro/Chrome site sometimes, since I don't see a lot of them and you can really tell how fond the artist is of these characters. Plus, okay. There are a couple of Hibari/Chrome illustrations tucked away in the galleries as well and I'm weak okay. :| Also! Squalo and Chrome! Bel and Chrome! Super adorable I-Pin! A smidge of Hibari/I-Pin! The site is totally designed to take me down, okay. XD (Some gen, some Mukuro/Chrome, a bit of other het.)
- Shaman King - [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I'm going to have a bit of a difficult time explaining what it is about this site that I like so much, but, well, eh. What caught my attention about the artist's style is that it's... almost kind of quirky? It's almost sort of chibi-esque, but that's not quite it and it has all these really cute little details in it and it's... maybe saying it's stylized would be a better way to put it. But also it's Yoh and Anna and I'm weak, okay. But whatever caught me, it's just. Quirky and interesting and was a nice little treat today. ♥ (Yoh/Anna.)
- Shaman King - SISTER MOON [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I hesitated with this site again a bit, but only because there wasn't quite as much art here as I'd have liked. But the fully done illustrations on the site were very satisfying for someone who'd been craving Shaman King (or, well, really Yoh/Anna) art this afternoon and then there were a bunch of really cute doodles and just... it satisfies the shipper in me, okay. Not that it's all them, there's some really cute art of the other characters as well, including a really nice one of Ren and one of Amidamaru that I really liked. A nice site to give me my fix again today. (Half Yoh/Anna, half gen.)
- Shaman King - DESERT*STAR [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, oh, oh, I was immediately taken with this site, so hard. It's got a sort of chibi-esque style (that's not quite it, but I'm not sure how else to describe it) with these incredibly warm, gorgeous colors that make each illustration so... quaint and cute and beautiful. It only took me a couple of clicks into the gallery to fall in love and it's-- okay, a lot of it is that I'm weak to this style and I've been craving Mankin art all morning, but it really is one of the best sites I've seen for the series yet. There's this one. Of Hao outside a warm scene on a Christmas night, while he's wrapped up in a blanket in the snow. Every time I look at it, I just-- asl;dkfjaslkj keyboard mash. It's a parody of The Little Matchgirl, it shouldn't delight me this much! And yet it does! Same for Anna as Little Red Riding Hood! Or Hao and Yoh as Hansel and Gretel! It's almost sort of chibi-esque, but that's not quite it and it has all these really cute little details in it and it's... maybe saying it's stylized would be a better way to put it. But also it's Yoh and Anna and I'm weak, okay. But whatever caught me, it's just. Quirky and interesting and was a nice little treat today. ♥ (Yoh/Anna.)
- Shaman King - SISTER MOON [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - I hesitated with this site again a bit, but only because there wasn't quite as much art here as I'd have liked. But the fully done illustrations on the site were very satisfying for someone who'd been craving Shaman King (or, well, really Yoh/Anna) art this afternoon and then there were a bunch of really cute doodles and just... it satisfies the shipper in me, okay. Not that it's all them, there's some really cute art of the other characters as well, including a really nice one of Ren and one of Amidamaru that I really liked. A nice site to give me my fix again today. (Half Yoh/Anna, half gen.)
- Shaman King - DESERT*STAR [ Japanese Fanart Site ] - Oh, oh, oh, I was immediately taken with this site, so hard. It's got a sort of chibi-esque style (that's not quite it, but I'm not sure how else to describe it) with these incredibly warm, gorgeous colors that make each illustration so... quaint and cute and beautiful. It only took me a couple of clicks into the gallery to fall in love and it's-- okay, a lot of it is that I'm weak to this style and I've been craving Mankin art all morning, but it really is one of the best sites I've seen for the series yet. There's this one. Of Hao outside a warm scene on a Christmas night, while he's wrapped up in a blanket in the snow. Every time I look at it, I just-- asl;dkfjaslkj keyboard mash. It's a parody of The Little Matchgirl, it shouldn't delight me this much! And yet it does! Same for Anna as Little Red Riding Hood! Or Hao and Yoh as Hansel and Gretel! I really love this site a lot, it's just shot up to be among my favorites in the fandom, I think. Just. ♥♥♥♥ (No real warnings/pairings.)
