--And finally one to watch the movie!"
This was what a co-worker told me after I shared my first impressions over Evangelion 3.0, finally released in a proper subbed version (but STFU, it'll be released in Italian cinemas too, on September ♥ ! I CAN'T WAIT!!)... He was making fun of my delirious over-analysis and mindfuckery, something that is quite dear to us Evafags, and we tend to forget.
Together with the fact that Anno is basically a troll, and he never actually provided any explanation of sort about anything concerning Evangelion EVER.
So, this is my honest post with my honest considerations on the movies, and the shocking new infos and material it's made of.
I suggest you to
watch the movie before reading this post because, yeah, it's all filled with SPOILER and DESPERATION (and a bit of hope, too!).
So, the movie is set 14 years after what we suppose to be the end of Evangelion 2.0.
This means that the preview that we're showed after 2.0 is nothing but a troll. What happened after Kaworu's arrival or how the Third Impact evolved is not showed.
Instead we have Asuka trying to retrieve Ikari Shinji nontheless, somehow floating into space in some kind of cross-shaped thing; we got to know that the most of Nerv staff is no longer Nerv, but it's called Wille and Nerv (now basically composed of just Gendo, Fuyutsuki, Rei and Kaworu) is their enemy.
The Wille owns some kind of badass "spaceship" called Wunder, and its engine is the ex-Unit 01. That's really kinda cool. An all kind all lesbian, considering its crew.
Anyway, Shinji is quite WTF, and we share his same feelings, everything looks kinda steampunkish, Misato and Ritsuko look older and all pissed off, and everybody seems to hate him!
Basically, 14 years ago Shinji fucked things up quite nicely, the world is pretty much ruined and Wille kidnapped him to avoid further desasters, since Nerv is still keen on using the boy.
In all this WTFery, there's space for new characters! A pink-haired cutie who's my favourite already and, OMG, Toji's little sister all cutely grown-up and healthy! AWWW SAKURA-CHAN ;___;
But we have no time to waste! A Wild Ayanami appears, and kidnaps Shinji herself (that at this point Shinji is quite keen on leaving that place where everybody hates him) to bring him back to Nerv.
For our utter shock Rei is wearing a black plug-suit and guess what-- She doesn't remember anything about Shinji and whatever.
...And guess what, I can't find decent screenshots or figures on sale, but it's already full of cosplays:
--NOT BAD, girls.
But let's keep it on track.
So, Shinji is back to Nerv, everything is destroyed, his dad is even worser that before, all zombie-like doing nothing but repeating always the same sentences over and over ("It's all proceeding according to plans."), Rei is no good for any kind of psychological support and Fuyutsuki has the great idea of revealing everything about his mum's death to Shinji over a friendly shogi match. Nice.
Fortunately Kaworu-kun is there!
He decides to take care of Shinji by the means of music therapy and they have this cute piano duet <3

So, BLAHBLAHBLAH, Shinji has to keep his ass moving, he has the mission to give happiness to the world and he has to do it with Kaworu! Drama ensues, but in the end Kaworu convinces him to go ahead with the mission.
The two boys have to pilot this new Eva 13, that works with two entry-plugs. Very nice.
Rei is following to give support but Shinji is all "Umphf, what is she doing here!" (Fuyutsuki also told him that Rei is the clone of his mother and she's happily replaceable), then Asuka and Mari comes to bother them (they had to retrieve the two spears needed for the Human Instumentality Project, the Longinus spear and its twin, the Cassius Spear), there's some fight, Kaworu realizes that something is off, Shinji is a complete moron and-- THIRD IMPACT ENSUES!
Have a Revoltech for visual help:
--But this time Mari and Asuka manage to stop them, KAWORU DIES (and I cried for ever), and, well, the movie ends with Asuka, Shinji and Rei all alone in this messy almost-post-Impact area and decide to move ahead towards the Lilin's place.
What's that? What about the many dead Evas that we see in the background, all around the city, splattered here and there? What about the EoE!Lilith's corpse and such? Hopefully we'll know about it in the NEXT movie, unless there's another gap of 14 years.
So, what are my impressions? I liked the idea of the time jump: faithful to the "musical concept" behind the alternate naming of the movies, this third movie sure was about "quickening", something like a fast-forward of this kind was unexpected and, I dare to say, refreshing.
The deal about Wille reminded me of the glorious times of Nadia of the Blue Waters, its same adventurous vibe.
It felt nostalgic, and sad, but also all kind of cool and hopeful.
It was fun to see how Misato and Ritsuko turned into Gendo and Fuyutsuki's alter-egos and nemesis.
I like the crew of Wille and I hope that we'll get to know more about them in the next movie.
Fuck, when I say that Anno shouldn't do all these movies but a brand new series, I mean this! I WANNA WATCH A 26 EPISODES LONG SERIES ABOUT WILLE ;_; !!
Mari! I gracefully hated her uselessness in 2.0, in this movie she becomes interesting, even intriguing.
Many fans pointed out some interesting things about her, for example how "old-fashioned" she is. Singing Japanese songs of the 60s, using an old cellphone, and so on. It was also noted that she's quite acknowledged compared to the average Eva pilot. Unable to stop, everyone is already going on with the weirdest theories.
The one I liked the most is the one about Mari being Asuka's mother. But I think that it's more probable that she's actually a spy of Nerv. The way she "messes up" their missions looks more like something planned instead of simple distractions, expecially considering that she's quite a skilled pilot.
I liked Rei in this movie. THANK GOD, we had nothing of the pitiful Rei/Shinji from 2.0.
It's all about subtle changes, a slow "awakening" of her consciousness through tiny suggestions here and there.
In the end Rei decides to follow Asuka and Shinji in this sort of new adventure, even if nobody invited her.
Is she looking for human contact? Does she want to know more about herself, and decides to follow those who know about Ayanami? Or is she acting out of mere survival instinct..?
I'm glad that we're back to this "unknown level" of Ayanaminess ♥
And in the end, Gendo.
He's one of my favourite character but in this movie he's nothing more than a zombie.
Even his sentences are always the same.
Fuyutsuki is following him, though, and it looks like, among everyone else in the cast, he's the only one who truly understands the weight of his sins-- Looking at Gendo throught the tired eyes of Fuyutsuki, we can get a glimpse of the sadness of his existence...
...So, what about you guys? Crazy theories, opinions, WTFeries..?
Dae is here to hear you out, and share some deep Evafaggotry with you <3
