Romics 2009 - Day 1 Report
So, I'm back from Romics 09.
Today it's been the first day that I attended, I'm planning on going tomorrow too to meet some friendz.
caska_langley was there too, as old-time Evangelion fans we couldn't avoid the premiere of Evangelion 0.2... It's been as awesome as bothering, but I'll talk about the movies at the end of the post--
The disturbing alert from a doujinshi stand.
--Some random thoughts on the convention.
I can't understand HOW THE HELL it's SO TINY D'X
It should be an important convention since it's in Rome and it's the Italian selective stage for the Cosplay Summit in Nagoya-- On the contrary, there were just two pavilions out of ONE THOUSAND (Honestly, the Nuova Fiera di Roma is quite huge), and one of them was dedicated to the movies screenings only.
Also, it was full of "private" stands of people selling weird Japanese stuff (who the fuck cares about necklaces made of [fake] candies and cupcakes?!) or self-made thinglets (sure, cute, but definitely useless), when it would have been better to have more professional stands dedicated to publishers and other companies.
God bless the private sellers reselling used mangas at extremely cheap prices, like 1 euros or half-price; unfortunately the stuff I was looking for wasn't there (OF COURSE) but it's been nice to see that they EXISTED.

I didn't take many pictures 'cause I was busy talking with Caska and getting pumped for Gurren and Evangelion movies-- This explain these next two shots:
The context:
caska_langley: Blablabla-OH SHIT, What's that?! (see picture 1)

*brief discussion with the owner of the stand*
tomoe_daeva: --But do you think it can actually stand on its feet?
Owner: Uh... *perplexed* I guess.
tomoe_daeva: --Maybe it has a pedestal or such--
Owner: *looks at the box, even more perplexed* I don't see any here--
caska_langley: Oh, c'mon, I don't think that the drill is full... It should be pretty light, after all--
Owner: Uh-- Not really... *gives it to Caska to let it weight it*
caska_langley: Woah.
tomoe_daeva: *nods sagely*
*Caska considers buying it as we walk away*
caska_langley: Ok, that was pretty cool. I dare there's nothing cooler than tha--OH SHIT, I WAS WRONG! (see picture 2)
tomoe_daeva: Oh my-- It's--- It's him?! Oh my-- *drools*

We were happy girls.
Now, since this is the main reason for this post, lets go with some short reports about the movies featured today.
Naturally since those were premieres out of Gainax and Khara studios's generosity, we've been threated to not take pictures or film the movies or the screening would have been stopped and cancelled.
So, no pictures will be shown in the reviews.
Since Gainax FAILS, we had to see the version of the movie without subtitles.
Anyway, the most of the audience kept being there and watching because of the undeniable share of AWESOMENESS.
The story is the same of the TV series, but there've been a few changes and lots of cuts, mostly to fit the movie format.
Anyway! The first scene is one of the most EPIC things I've ever watched. I GOT FUCKING GOOSEBUMPS.
We also spot a young Genome getting to fight the Anti-Spirals. We just see his muscular silhouette, long hair floating in the space and his red "drill eyes".
Me and Caska decided that he's fucking hot. And that we must slash him with Viral just for the sake of it.
The cool thing is that among Genome's robot army we can spot some classical mecha eroes like Kotetsu Jeeg, Mazinger and other awesomeness who painted our childhood with happiness.
Anyway, the movie starts and everything is pretty similar to the actual series, but hey cut all the meetings with the other characters like Kittan and Rossiu...Which has been a pity since Rossiu was awesome even when he was still an ugly kid XD It's really depressing how little Rossiu showed up, when he does it was just to look lonely 'cause Simon doesn't want to "gattai" him or lurk around Leeron...
Kamina dies here too, and me and Caska were tempted to leave the pavilion to not suffer for it again, but in the end we stayed there to shed our MANLY TEARS of mourning.
Then, when Nia appears, it's not only Adiane, but all the three remaing generals (+Viral) who went to fight against the Gurren guys: Adiane (who's pretty ninja-like) has a hand-to-hand fight against Yoko (BOOBS EVERYWHERE) and Viral has a fight with Rossiu, who's piloting Lagann in place of Kamina.
Cytomander dies miserably 'cause he attempted to harm Nia XD Then the other evil guys merged their robots in a big evil robot (...) and they went to fight against Gurren-Lagann, that's enhanced by Simon's renewed powers-- Gurren-Lagann of course destroyed it.
The movie ends with the Gurren people mourning Kamina (WHAT?! Where did they keep the corpse 'til now? [caska_langley: Probably Yoko kept him in her closet--]).
It's been a pretty cool version, also if the squeezed plot didn't help to give justice to the other characters and their relationship with each-others...
--And now to the hot shit.
I wasn't really intrigued by this Eva remake, but I must say that it's been pretty cool, and also if they raped some characters I must say that Anno did a good job.
The story is pretty different in many parts from the original series, so I'll try to give you a nice summary; I may have mixed some scenes, but I don't think I missed anything:
The movie opens with the test of Eva 05 (scaaary), and the introduction of its pilot, Mari Illustrious Makinami.
I'm not sure of what happens next, but Mari get to fight against an Angel (?!) there: she defeated it, but the base is destroyed.
She managed to escape just like Kaji, who meanwhile got Adam from there.
Back in Japan, Gendo brought his son to the cemetery to visit Yui's graveyard. The same stuff.
Another Angel is attacking the place and it's time for Asuka's introduction: she destroyed the angel herself and then reaches Nerv with her Eva; on the way to Nerv, Asuka Soryu Shikinami manages to insult Shinji.
Asuka is not related to Kaji there, she's a Captain and yes, still lives together with Shinji at Misato's home.
Some days later Misato brings everyone to visit an aquarium in some kind of military ship; the thing really reminds of the Noah ark.
Rei is there too, and Shinji approached her to say some shit while Asuka glared at them from afar: Shinji has a crush on Rei here. I bet he'd like to have a crush on Asuka too, but Asuka is too busy being antisocial and kicking him.
Gendo and Fuyutsuki are on the moon to retrieve the Longinus Spear. Kaworu is there too, doing nothing but looking pretty.
He saw Gendo and says "Hello, father."
Dae and Caska got kinda shocked, but they guessed he referred to Adam implanted on Gendo's hand.
Another Angel attacks and Asuka, Shinji and Rei are asked to teamwork.
The scenes where the Eva runs around the city to stop the Angel from dropping itself over NeoTokyo3 are just amazing-- They are a tribute to athletic sports, from hurdling to cycling.
Shinji is particularly hot here, as Caska noted.
Shinji stopped the Angel from falling, Rei managed to find its core and kept it still for Asuka to destroy it.
Gendo says that Shinji did a good job here, and Asuka gets kinda emo.
Asuka is much more a lonely character than the anime version: she forces herself to stay by herself and to consider loneliness something inevitable in human life.
She's still proud and pushy, but she also shows her vulnerable sides by keeping herself separated from the others, being the other pilots or classmates: she's shown playing with a portable videogame most of the time.
There's some kind of paralel with Rei's glasses, Shinji's music-player and a doll that asuka keeps with her: all of them are some kind of "memento" from their parental figures.
So we get to know that the music-player of Shinji actually belonged to Gendo.
Asuka is still wondering about her loneliness issues, so goes to sleep in Shinji's bed.
They're both awake there, and Shinji doesn't try to kiss Asuka as Asuka doesn't murmur "Mama ;_;" in her sleep.
They talked for a bit and Asuka told Shinji that he could call her by her name.
At some point, I don't remember exactly when, Mari returns: she lands over Shinji after she jumped from somewhere with a parachute ò_o
She lands on the School roof where Shinji was minding his own business, but she doesn't attend school there.
She calls Shinji a "Nerv's dog" and says that he's interesting (??) before leaving.
Shinji got busy making bento for everyone, being Misato, Asuka and now Rei.
Rei thanks him, then wonders about her words of gratitude.
The next day she's absent because of some tests, presumabily for the dummy-plug.
Gendo looks at her in the LCL tube, then invites her to dinner.
Rei starts planning some stuff: to learn cooking and make a party to invite everyone there, hoping to make Shinji and Gendo getting along.
Rei is very maternal and Yui-like here, and it's cute how she worries over Gendo and Shinji relationship.
In the infamous scene where Rei and Asuka met in the elevator, Asuka asks her what she thinks of Shinji.
Rei says that she feels nice when she's with him and want Shinji to feels nice too, expecially when he's with his father.
Asuka tries to slap her, but Rei stops her.
Caska here noted a Gendo/Shinji Rei fangirl. I suggested a Gendo/Rei/Shinji threesome, saying that it wouldn't bother me so much, since Gendo is there to act as a "adhesive" XD
There's also the scene where Kaji shows Shinji his watermelons (no yaoi pun intended, also if Kaji approaches Shinji very gay-like, shocking the boy and making Dae and Caska pretty happy XD), trying to teach Shinji that dealing with life is always a good thing.
Then-- Toji is happy 'cause his little sister is going to be released from the hospital.
Meanwhile Eva 04 arrives from the USA; the unit has to be tested and unfortunately it's on the same day of Rei's party.
Asuka realized it and offers to test the Eva 04 so everyone can go to the party.
Asuka: *happy to be useful* I was used to be lonely, but I guess that being together with other people is nice too. From now on, I wanna be happy.
tomoe_daeva: I bet she's going to die now.
EXACTLY.
Asuka got infected by an Angel and Rei's party doesn't even start because of the emergency.
The scene where Asuka got infected by the Angel is shown and it's FUCKING SCARY AND AWESOME.
Meanwhile Shinji is ready to fight but he's shocked to see that the enemy is another EVA. Somehow, he knows that Asuka is there.
Shinji doesn't want to harm Asuka, so Gendo switches the Dummy plug that makes a FUCKING MESS.
You see that Evangelion are based on human anatomy. It's full of blood, guts everywhere and other organs as the EVA 01 feasts happily on EVA 04.
Then it finds the entry plug where Asuka is in and it MUNCHES it.
Drama ensues, and Shinji is "phisically" kicking the NERV HQ: Gendo got him to sleep and then expelled him from the Nerv.
Mari arrived to Nerv to take Asuka's place.
Naturally, an Angel attacks.
Mari goes to fight and show us this brand new "Beast Mode" kind of fighting, some kind of "lucid berserk".
Mari is pretty scary and feral here and the fight is awesome, but she's defeated anyway.
Rei arrives with her kamikaze attempt to destroy the Angel's core: Mari tries to help but they both failed.
The explosion sent Mari in the shield where Shinji was during the attack.
Somehow they can talk with each other.
Mari grabs Shinji and takes him outside to show the mess.
The Angel eats the Eva 01 and Rei inside, becoming some kind of Lilith with an Angel face (not sure how to explain this >_>;).
Shinji is impressed and rushed to Nerv despite the explosions and general mess, begging Gendo to pilot EVA 01 again.
Gendo is pretty happy about it, since the EVA 01 is rejecting the dummy.
Shinji attacks the Angel and makes some happy mess out of it but his priority is taking Rei back from the Angel's insides.
Caska was about to vomit for the Shinji/Rei moment, and I tried to explain this as "He already lost Asuka, so I guess he doesn't want another girl to sacrify herself for his failing at acting like a man".
Somehow Shinji reaches the insides of the Angel (in a very metaphoric/tripping way) and finds Rei.
Rei doesn't want Shinji to give his life away for her, but Shinji insists, and eventually she reached for his hand.
And so starts the Third Impact.
Some smartass commentary, I'll be fast 'cause I'm tired.
1. The movie is AWESOMELY made.
Expecially the backgrounds, the fights-- The general animation... Just great.
2. The way Asuka is treated here is just OBSCENE. She practically does nothing, and goes out of the scene ridiculously.
She's colder that the Asuka we know and love, and all the romantic implications with Shinji have been completely ERASED.
3. If Asuka gets colder, Rei got warmer.
I'm not complaining, it's a comprehensible choice and it's not so bad.
She likes Shinji, but she likes him together with his father and wants them to get along: she's really maternal and cute, I liked this.
4. Mari is just a psycho. I don't think she's a tribute to classic mecha heroes, pigreco... She could be an interesting character, I was intrigued by her "I don't care if it hurts as long as it's fun" attitude, but she's not such a memorable character, probably because of the little screentime.
caska_langley said that she was useless, a mere meganekko version of good ol' Asuka.
I think that her presence makes sense since Asuka's huge lack of the original charisma. But it's not like Mari is more charismatic. I actually don't even understand how she managed to arrive to Japan in the first place >_> And why the hell an Angel attacked her base >_> !!
And that's all.
In the end, a little report on my shopping.

First I bought the mangas I needed, Shigurui 10 and Black Jack 20 (14,50 euros), then I got that cute ultrafake Pinky:Cos Rei (4 euros), a Rei uh... cellphone-holder? (4 euros) and a Gendo figure (6 euros) from the Excellent Portraits series... Tomorrow I'm probably going to buy a few more shit *_*;

I'm not complaining, it's a comprehensible choice and it's not so bad.
She likes Shinji, but she likes him together with his father and wants them to get along: she's really maternal and cute, I liked this.
4. Mari is just a psycho. I don't think she's a tribute to classic mecha heroes, pigreco... She could be an interesting character, I was intrigued by her "I don't care if it hurts as long as it's fun" attitude, but she's not such a memorable character, probably because of the little screentime.
caska_langley said that she was useless, a mere meganekko version of good ol' Asuka.
I think that her presence makes sense since Asuka's huge lack of the original charisma. But it's not like Mari is more charismatic. I actually don't even understand how she managed to arrive to Japan in the first place >_> And why the hell an Angel attacked her base >_> !!

First I bought the mangas I needed, Shigurui 10 and Black Jack 20 (14,50 euros), then I got that cute ultrafake Pinky:Cos Rei (4 euros), a Rei uh... cellphone-holder? (4 euros) and a Gendo figure (6 euros) from the Excellent Portraits series... Tomorrow I'm probably going to buy a few more shit *_*;
