NICOTINE

Nicotine is a highly addictive substance found in cigarettes and has been known to cause lung cancer. It travels from the bloodstream to the brain, then distributed to the rest of the body. It accounts for both the joyous feelings that incur while smoking and the irritation you encounter when trying to quit. Nicotine can diffuse through the skin, mucous membranes and lungs. The most common method of consumption is through inhalation (smoking). After inhalation it takes approximately 10 to 15 seconds for the nicotine to take effect. About 80 percent of nicotine is broken down to Cotinine by enzymes in your liver. Nicotine is also metabolized in your lungs to Cotinine and nicotine oxide. Cotinine and other metabolites are excreted in your urine. Cotinine has a 24-hour half-life, so you can test whether or not someone has been smoking in the past day or two by screening his or her urine for cotinine. The remaining nicotine is filtered from the blood by your kidneys and excreted in the urine. Nicotine changes the way your brain and body operate. It can bother relax and invigorate a smoker. Nicotine primarily causes a quick release of adrenaline, which causes an increase in blood pressure, and a rapid heartbeat and shallow breath.
