Thomas was still on extended leave from the force. Heaven above only knew how much vacation time he had accrued since he rarely took any time off at all in the past. He had four months left from his six month leave and he was spending it right here in Superior, Arizona. Mary was just barely recovering and Catherine, as well, was just getting back to teaching at the school.

Taking up the phone, he looked at the number he had been given he left a message for Father Jez, inviting him to visit when his parish could allow. Maybe an outsider from the events could help him to focus. Something, he was not doing too much of lately, except in the case of sorting out the aftermath for others. That settled, he went through all the evidence again; evidence that somehow mysteriously never found its way back t the LAPD.

And it never would. It would be the end of his career as a detective and seeing that no one except the original bodies (in the eyes of the law anyway), had died, there'd not be much fuss. The dry detail and minimal necessary evidence sufficed and he was happy that his bosses left well enough alone.

To the Church, however, he sent a copy of every scrap of evidence. He still had not heard back from them except for them to say that it had been properly archived. What else was there to say? His status as a defunct would be priest only allowed him so much leeway with the big boys here in the states, let alone the Vatican to where the papers were being stored.

Taking a drag off his smoke, he took in the sight of dust and dirt being kicked up in the air by a passing service truck. Standing outside his rented house, he was just close enough to hear the phone should it ring while he smelled the summer air that held no taint of dead Archangels or Lucifer's breath on his back.
