quote credit Thomas didn’t want to worry his sister but he had no choice, Thomas mused thoughtfully as he settled the phone receiver back in its cradle. That wasn’t really true. He wanted to go he didn’t have to go - get out of Los Angels for a few days and process the information on Hawthorn in his own way. Maybe he could get the conversation that he had with the red haired individual into perspective. Was his name Simon? He could not really remember. It rung a bell, the name but he was too focused on the case before him to do anything other than light speculation as he hopped in the car, packed with everything that he needed for the trip.
As the stranger had asked or merely stated, it really did used to be that simple. But that was long before the ordination ceremony gone horribly wrong. So wrong, that it ended with his nervous breakdown, Thomas leaving the seminary, and killing his lifelong dream of becoming a priest.
He could heed her advice. Jan always was good at sniffing out trouble that way. But he wouldn’t. Superior, Arizona was exactly where he would find the answers. The body of one General Arnold Hawthorn would tell him everything he needed to know. Then he could stop thinking about obscure bible passages that were never to have existed, wars in heaven, or debate his non-existent faith, ever again.
