Under the cut, songs by Air and Deerhoof.

Air (feat. Buffalo Daughter) - "Sex Born Poison"

Released in 2001.

To me, "Sex Born Poison" encompasses everything that makes 10,000 Hz Legend Air's under-recognised masterpiece. Wry humour, lyrical surreality, sonic otherworldliness, perfect melding of the duo's human, robotic and alien aesthetics, awesome guest vocals, chiptune breakdowns, unrelenting experimentation - it's all here, making this song perhaps the most instantly noticeable departure from Air's usual schtick on an album full of such departures. Buffalo Daughter's vocal duties are especially enticing - delivered in a seductive, half-awake style that's incredibly beguiling.

Deerhoof - "This Magnificent Bird Will Rise"

Released in 2002.

To me, this is hands-down the drumming performance of the decade. Greg Saunier never ceases to amaze me with his loose, minimalist style of drumming, with all of its unhinged vitality, inventiveness and unpredictable twists and turns. Of course, John Dieterich and Satomi Matsuzaki both excel playing their usual parts, providing the wild guitar lines, groovy bass and sugary vocals that are all recognisable trademarks of the 'hoof's sound. But first and foremost, this one boils down to being a spectacle of percussion. Be sure to check out the live clip, too - given that Saunier looks like a Muppet on uppers, he's always good value to watch.
