I'm not really much of a Strokes fan. I never bought the "saviors of rock" tag they got lumped with, and while Is This It is a solid slice of garage revival, its high placement on end-of-decade lists is something I find a little baffling. That being said, the group did manage to pen one of the decade's finest songs. Despite kicking off the widely maligned First Impressions of Earth album, "You Only Live Once" is a near perfect slice of radio-ready pop/rock, strong on the mid-60s vibes, loaded with instantly memorable melodies and featuring what is perhaps Julian Casablancas most charismatic vocal effort to date. The replay value here is off the chart.

2008 saw the music world experience an unexpected funk revival, with albums from The Menahan Street Band, The New Mastersounds, Nomo and Karl Hector and the Malcouns keeping dance floors burning in new and exciting ways. The Apples also played their part by delivering the excellent Buzzin' About, with their song "Stack it Up!" being my pick for the revival's standout track (although it gets some competition from "Sahara Swing" and "All the Stars" by Karl Hector and Nomo, respectively). There's a lot going on in this track: deep-down bass-lines, a sizable horn section, some DJ scratching and multiple percussionists. It all gels perfectly, though, displaying a high-octane synergy that's downright irresistible.
