Chapter 10

The next couple of days went by extraordinarily slow. Tom did almost every chore he could think of early every morning. He made breakfast again, and again. He cleaned the horses stalls, and he even kept insulting Rupert. Tom went back and forth from the store to get different things, and he went on different errands for Venice.

Alessandra stayed around the summerhouse mostly and explored around. She rode with Venice on the horses that stayed in the stable. Sometimes Alessandra would take walks on the beach and wouldn’t return until later during the night, when she let herself in quietly while the others were sleeping. She ate what Tom cooked and constantly looked after him while keeping him company. She even ironed and pressed his clothes for him while he was away.

Rupert continued to be an ass. He sat around most of the time telling Tom what needed to be done, while flexing. He also continued to confuse himself with puzzles, some of which Tom had tampered with even more so far to the extent of putting crackers in the box. Rupert would drift around the house, eating as he went. He messed up the house as much as he could, just to make Tom’s days seem longer.

Venice, on the other hand, would be gone for most parts of the day. She went riding around the paths that covered her property and went out on the yacht on the ocean. Tom watched her a couple days as he moved wood, or shoveled dirt. This was hopefully going to make up for Alessandra and Scotland, he thought. So he continued to do work willingly.

After a week of this routine, Tom got impatient. “Venice? I still need to talk to you about going to Scotland…” he said after a day of long work. Venice shifted in her seat slightly and looked past Tom at the beach behind him. She didn’t answer so Tom asked again. Again she didn’t answer, and Rupert came outside to join them on the patio. He sat in between Tom and Venice and glanced back and forth while inhaling an apple.

Tom shook his head and went inside. He moodily shut the door as he did so. Then he moodily sat down and was moodily moody. After much moodily moodiness he got up and walked outside the front where Alessandra was sitting on the porch. She was sitting on the steps counting the numerous stars that were appearing in the sky.

“Hey” Tom greeted as he stepped onto the porch. “I’ve got a plan.”

“Oh?” asked Alessandra as she caught her look off of the stars and forced them willingly to Tom’s eyes.

“Yeah,” Tom proceeded, “You and I are going to Scotland, the other two can join us if they like, but I am in a serious rush to get out of here for two reasons. First of all, as you know, my ministry work needs to be taken care of. Second of all…I can’t stand it here!” He threw his hands up in the air and started to walk back in. “Make sure your stuff is packed and ready for the train to the airport tomorrow.” He headed back to the patio to tell the others of his plans.

The next day Tom woke up at the crack of dawn, and this time it was not to make breakfast. They could make their own breakfast for all he cared. He had gotten his stuff together the night before so he could easily toss his stuff into the cab he had pre-ordered. He made sure he had woken up Alessandra in time for her to get dressed properly and be ready to catch the cab when it arrived. As the cab pulled into the driveway he told Alessandra to go ahead and get in. Then he walked up the steps quietly.

Tom opened Venice’s door slowly and crept carefully into the room. She lie there asleep in her bed, slowly breathing. Tom watched her slowly and made his way quietly toward her. He leaned over and kissed her forehead without waking her and then, after throwing thoughts out of his head, walked out and down the hall. He passed Rupert’s room and stopped.

Tom glanced in the room that Rupert was sleeping in and he was dead asleep sprawled across the bed. Tom walked in the guest room that Rupert was occupying and was careful not to be too loud. He grabbed Rupert’s wallet and pulled some cash out of it quickly, and stuck it into his pocket. The he punched Rupert in the stomach waking him up abruptly. “Thanks bud” said Tom as he left the door, closing it behind him.
