Warning, this is extremely squicky and trigerry.
There's a
thread over at
ontd_feminism which
fruhlings and
ascenseur have signal-boosted on their journals.
For those who aren't members,
here is the source, click at your own risk.
And now on to the meta.
To make a long story short, Dr. Dix Poppas, a pediatric urologist, performed clitoral surgery on 51 little girls. To summarize the procedure (and I'm no doctor, so pardon the layman's terms) the 'doctor' would reduce the size of the girl's clits and then perform follow-up annual visits. With a vibrator. Oh, pardon me, a "medical vibratory device." These kids are at least 5 - so old enough to remember. THERE IS A PARENT IN THE ROOM (see the
article on BioEthics forum). And the main reason under this,
as stated by critical psychologist Dr. Dreger on her blog, is the questionable belief that women with large clitorises are more inclined to lesbianism, tomboyishness and agressiveness.
Look who's steaming, right now. JUST LOOK.
And.
Dreger notes that the parents probably went ahead with the ~study~ because they didn't know better. Or because Doctors know best. And I'm a little bit appalled that no-one is looking into this and accepting this sort of sheepishness. Because. Seriously.
FOLKS. If someone said, "OHAY, I WILL CUT YOUR CHILD'S GENITALIA AND THEN MASTURBATE HER IN FRONT OF YOU ONCE A YEAR UNTIL SHE'S EIGHTEEN."
Would you really go, "oh, okay, doctor knows best?"
Seriously?
I just can't. Do. This. Some of the folks over at
ontd_feminism found appropriate contact information and are writing letters to the dean and the university president, over at Cornell. Maybe when I can stop being blind and shaky with anger, I can do that too. AUGH.
And now I return to my study of James Joyce, Ireland, and identity building. AUGH.
Edit: For the icon, which I just realized is IRONICALLY appropriate. Oh dear god. I'm still so pissed off, I can't work. AUGH.
Edit2: Made public for signal boosting purposes, comments from non-friends will be screened. I encourage any who read this to give a signal boost of their own.
