Whiskey Thieves
839 Geary Street
San Francisco, CA 94101
Vlad called me a few Saturdays ago sometime around 5:00pm and informed me that The Resolution was starting. It meant not watching The Sharks game (my other sacred past time) that was on TV, but they were getting their asses kicked so I didn't mind. Plus, how the hell could I puss out of the first stage of The Resolution.
He had picked a bar called Whiskey Thieves, which is located in The Tenderloin. I think The Tenderloin gets a bad rap. Sure its dirty and grimy and can be a tad bit sketchy, but every time (which isn't that many) I've been in the area its been a good time...
The only thing I knew about the bar was the address. And, because I'm all kinds of smart, I figured that whiskey would be a big part of it. Cabbed it to the bar where I met up with Vlad and Natasha. They were already enjoying their first cocktail - whiskey and cokes I think. In the spirit of the bar, I should have ordered a whiskey drink, but instead I opted for the Belgian beer: Chimay. I love Belgian beers. Plus, when I'm at a bar, I tend to order beers that I haven't had. Chimay comes in a goblet and I was quite happy with it.
We sat and bullshitted for a while and took in the bar. I liked the bar, but it seems like it was a bit off. It appears to be a dive bar, but everything is too new. This isn't a bad thing, just an observation. Like, the paint was new, and the counters were new. No scratches or holes or stains. You know, your typical dive bar must haves. In a year or two, it will look like what it is. The bar did have my favorite pinball machine: Theatre of Magic. When I worked at Nickel City when I was 16, we'd stay after hours and play that all night. I was never much of a Street Fighter type of guy. Give me pinball any day. When I was ready to play, it was turned off. Still have no idea why. The bar also had a pool table. The bar did have a juke box, and it was one of those download songs of the net type of juke box, which I thought was odd for a dive bar. In a dive bar, there should be plenty of Skynrd, AC/DC, Johnny Cash, and Neil Diamond all pre-loaded for your drunken ass to select and sing to in a really horrible voice.
After my Chimay I wanted another one, but I had to get a Hoegarden. You just can't pass up Hoegarden, even if it is in a bottle and $5.00. The bar had a four page whiskey book. I should have had a whiskey drink, but I'll save that for the next time I'm there... I would definitely go back. Next time, later in the night. We were there from 5:30pm to about 7:30pm, and although it was a Saturday, it was dead...
So, the first leg of The Resolution is complete and was a success... Look for leg two real soon.
Disclaimer: the must drink a signature drink rule had not been enacted yet, so my drinks were completely within the rules
