Whitby

Been mulling this over for a bit and I have decided to post this on the WGW forum.

I am fully expecting that my profile will get removed after this but to be honest I am not that concerned either way ~shrug~

Before I get into it I would say that I have attended every Goth Weekend (week!) since Oct 1999 and I have attended the Spa from then until ( Read more... )

Well said that man! *tumultous applause* :)

I heartily agree with everything you said!
I just hope the right people see it and understand that this is, without doubt, the opinion of the majority of WGW regulars.

And let's face it, a lot of the flouncy outfits are worn by the Derby and Joan Victorian Top Hat And Flounce Appreciation Society who go there solely for the posing and have never heard any of the music! ;-p

I go to Whitby primarily to see friends and meet new people, secondly to dress up, thirdly to drink excessively and finally to go to the Spa and sit in the pink room to chat to the aforementioned friends! If there are any amazing bands on (I loved the Whitby of the Damned AND the Mission!) then that is a bonus. However, the music/bands is low on my list of priorities and the overpricing of tickets is not likely to change that fact.
Whitby Goth Weekend would still exist without the Spa now and I think it is in danger of fast disappearing up it's own arsehole!

WGW would of course bimble on for a while if the spa event collapsed but it would be important to get organizers of the fringe events to form some kind of recognized organization to talk with the authorities in Whitby and set the date and things. If the spa event does ever collapse this would need to be organized quickly.

I think the Spa event itself will not collapse but certainly the fringe events might increase. I am sure there are enough people interested in this issue to help organize an alternative.

I hope that's true, but I actually fear otherwise. The reason is that as far as I understand Whitby Joe tries to make a living for herself from the goth weekend. No I Understand fully that she is not trying to make a huge sallery from it, but I don't believe that given the costs of running the weekend against the limit on the number of people allowed in the Spa (Which is lower than it once was) she can not make enough money to live on. It pushes the cost of the tickets so high that they no longer sell enough of them. Hence the Spa event has entered a vicious circle.
Something has to give.
As with a forest fire a collapse may be followed by a renewal. To use a different metaphor, The Darleks have turned up but is the doctor Ecclstone or Tennant.
