Rolling Sturgis!? Hells YEAH!

I found out a short time ago that they now have a derby event along with the big Sturgis rally. (PS ... if you don't know what "Sturgis" means ... then Sturgis isn't for you! lol)

Rolling Sturgis website

This is apparently the 3rd year for it. When it comes to derby, I really do tend to have my head under a rock. I only found out about Worlds when my husband shared a link with me regarding an article with Smarty!!

I'm going to try to fix that ... altho I still won't do the "derby fandom/groupie" thing ... or give a shit about Nationals or most of the big "parties" &/or "tournies". The first one was cool simply because it existed ... kind of like the World Cup.

But Sturgis ... this makes me happy!

I went to the first Rollercon (before it was much more than a "ZOMG, there are OTHERS out there!" event). That was probably the only one that I'll go to. While I AM interested in the more "serious" things that they have added (seminars, training, the more organized scrimmages) -- it just isn't really my crowd. If I'm inclined to "party" (which isn't really me anyway) ... give me bikers over most anything else (see how politc that word choice for the second option was? lol).

Well ... I gathered my nerves up & contacted the lady organizing the event, & guess what?!

I'm one of the guest coaches/trainers!!

Since this post will be public, I'll withhold too many internal conversations about that for the moment. :)

I have yet to nail down which days &/or exactly what I'll be doing ... but it will almost definitely focus more on the basics -- the muscle memory things that as you get comfortable on skates you forget to do. (& I'll probably throw in some "BUY GOOD PADS" messages, because it kills me seeing people skate with minimal padding.)

I'm nervous, but excited. This will be the first time training outside of a "home" situation. I am one of the trainers for our Rec League, & while I might not be the best skater in the world, I'm a damn fine trainer, thankyouverymuch! (There WAS one bootcamp in Asheville, but that was as a part of the entire team ... no really ... the ENTIRE team tried to train at once, instead of designating a few as the actual trainers & just having everyone else help. OI!)

One of the (many) reasons why I wanted to do this is that after 10 years, it has occurred to me that when (if) I'm done skating "competitively" as a Hell Mary, I may not be in the "fuck it walk completely away" state. When the rest of the people that I started with left, there really weren't any "post active skater" roles out there, other than maybe bench coaching your old team. There is a lot more potential these days ... & I LOVE training! I don't have the "rockstar" resume that people like Smarty Pants have to back up WHY someone would want them to train ... so this is my way of working on at least getting a resume as a trainer.

Rediscovering LJ is part of my preparation for Rolling Sturgis -- building my confidence up in my ideas, as well as solidifying them somewhat by seeing them written down.

All of this has distracted me from the reason that I came online to post this in the first place! (If you don't know me, I tend to get excessively verbose ... )

If there is anyone out there that is thinking about attending Rolling Sturgis ... Click my name under the "who referred you"! We get extra brownie points ... & the people in my home league are far more likely to be excited about "Rollercon" than "Rolling Sturgis"

(PS ... I'M GONNA GET TO SEE SKYNRYD!!!! Whoooo!! Sometimes, my Alabama birthroots really do show! lol)
