Happy New Year to you my friends...

Dec 31, 2008 18:22

Each year seems to be more difficult to live as we grow older. I was born in 1987 and 1987 seem to pass really quickly, so quickly that I got no memory of it.. Memory develops as you grow older. Just thankful that I'm alive to see today and to remember yesterday. Today is 31st December 2008 and also the last day of 2008. What has 2008 brought us?

2008 has definitely made us, everybody, grew up.

The financial turmoil is definitely one of the biggest event that happened in 2008. Lehman Brothers went into insolvency, people losing their money from investments. Normal civilians losing their life savings, not a good sight. Government spending tax-payers money by 'bailing out' companies and bank. The bankers learnt from their mistake and are still paying for it as I type this. Forecasters has predicted that 2009 would definitely not be a good year for the financial sector. I have to cross my finger and hope they are wrong!

The financial turmoil also led to the election of a new president, Barack Obama.

The day the world knew that Barack Obama was going to the president of USA for the next four years, I almost had an election erection. I will be looking forward to the day when he begins implementing his policies and start taxing big companies. Cheers to that. On another note, the world claim that change has happen; in a way that an African American was elected, but that remains to be seen. Step back and just take a look, how many blacks are there actually holding up post in large companies are directors or shareholders or even becoming a minister in a state. They can be counted easily with just ten fingers. Lets hope that 2009 bring about changes not in terms of the change in government but also the change in humans perspective on each others race.

November, we see another terrorist attack in Mumbai, India. I would not go into it as it was a disaster itself already. Earthquakes, floods, forest fire and snow storm all happened in 2008 which led to many deaths and injuries. Definitely not a good year. My deepest condolences goes out to the those who are affected.

Also, in 2008, we witnessed a war between Russia and Georgia. Death were caused, condemns were made and thankfully everything was resolved before any more damage could be done to Georgia. The USA & UK had also made some wise decisions to withdraw troops from Iraq. Some countries have already withdrawn their troops fully. Thank god for that.

China has made its first public achievement with the grand opening of the Beijing Olympics in 2008. The world was amazed at China's ability and praised were received all over. I am proud to be Chinese. The Beijing Olympics has made the world realised China's financial power. However, setbacks were seen over the milk powder scandal. Investigations were made, many received death sentenced. Today, four more executive were due on trial over the scandal.

Africa has experienced its own problem as well, particularly Zimbabwe. We witness how cruel a government could be just to retain power. However, what we should recognise is the determination the Opposition has shown. Even till today, they are still fighting to have a re-election. There is hope... somewhere. I quote from the Shawshank redemption; hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.

My memory has registered all these events that has happened around the world in 2008. As for myself, what did I learn in 2008?

I recognised my own abilities in 2008. I learn more about myself and seen myself actually worked hard for something I want. I made horrible mistakes in 2008, doubted my own ability, character and personalities. Talked myself out of it, made friends with many, recognised what is really true friendship and know who really are my friends. I feel that I have matured or grown up. I know what I really want in life in terms of career and religion. But.... whatever it is, I feel that 2008 has been downright shitty, there are certainty good times but overall, 2008 hasnt been good. I hope 2009 would be better.

What do I hope for 2009? New Year resolutions? nah... too old for that and I never stick to them. let me think... I dont know.. to be honest, I'm quite afraid to welcome 2009 as I have no idea what 2009 will bring for myself and people around me... I just wish for myself and everybody around me to be truly happy. Kick off the bad habits that you discovered you may have in 2008 and start anew! This is a new year and definitely a new beginning.

Since it is the New Year, let's not forget a New Year song, enjoy.
