I don't usually think of the dentist's office as a horrible place, but today I had my first formally traumatic dentist experience. It's probably because I'm stretched so thin from getting ready for my thesis defense, but there were tears and literal whimpering involved. My dentist is a lovely person, but her way of describing the sensation that is caused by shoving a needle deep into my gums as "a slight pinch" is entirely dishonest. She ground out and replaced four fillings on three sides of my mouth. My entire lower jaw is numb and there were multiple warnings about how it might be "sensitive" later today, so I'm guessing that it's only going to be soft food for a little while.
I will also say that I feel very fortunate to be in a position where I both have dental insurance and can afford to pay for the portion of the bill that the insurance won't cover. There are lots of people that can't afford to get the work they need, including some of my friends.
Still, I think I'm going to crawl into bed for a little while.
