Pardner and I have decided to join the Y, which I am very excited about. It turns out--I didn't even know!--that the downtown Y is only 3 blocks from work. I stopped by today because I'm going to try out their lunchtime yoga class tomorrow, and I had questions about lockers, towels, how full the class gets, etc. The *very fit* helpdesk worker looked at the schedule and said, "oh. Intermediate level." Yes, I am fat. Yes, I am going to take an intermediate yoga class. It's not the first time, and it won't be the last, that I will get that attitude. Yes, I have been taking yoga classes for fifteen years, and I can wend my way through an intermediate yoga class. There are these colliding assumptions that if you have been practicing yoga for a long time, you must have a gorgeous "yoga body" OR if you are fat then you must not exercise, much less know the inside of a yoga studio. There is just so much apparent concern in our society over obesity but when you get right down to the nitty gritty, there's a surprising lack of support for fat people trying to be fit. Have I mentioned how many times I've been heckled while humping it on my bike?
Sorry, I just had to air that.
Back to my underlying glee that the Y, in a beautiful historic building, is incredibly close to work and offers a bazillion exercise classes per week all for one low monthly price. They'll just have to get used to me huffing and humping around.
