Fifth porcupine spotted today. Well, I think that I've actually spotted three, since two have been in very similar neighborhoods as previous sightings. I'm quite smitten with them. I also saw a heron. I'm starting to think about investing in a pair of binoculars, though that unfortunately won't happen until after this trip is well over. There are a lot of different birds here. Maybe I saw a couple puffins on my walk as well? It's hard to tell, since I am staying well away from the water (dire warnings from park staff were the opening comments today).
I'm learning a l, meeting lots of people, and generally having a very worthwhile time.
One of the other attendees is from Mississippi, and mentioned something about that these woods have no undergrowth. Not to be critical, but she's wrong. The spring undergrowth in these woods is very subtle and delicate, and requires some willingness to slow down and really *look*. Everything is just emerging from the winter. . .there's lichen galore, blooming mosses, tender young grasses that are just poking up their first shoots, ferns unfolding their primary tendrils. I promised myself that I would go for a walk everyday while I'm here, and today proved that this is a very good plan. There is just so much to see, in its own tender way.
