I'm sitting in a hideously over-decorated, over-priced hotel room in Port Hadlock, WA. Pardner is happily snoring in a late afternoon nap.
I visited a tiny air museum up here on the Olympic Peninsula this morning, and had a short interview with a very intense man. I wasn't welcomed to kick around the museum all day as I have been at other institutions, but as a new museum, they are pretty swamped. The museum has a very intense education program that is frankly quasi-military. Because the kids also get to fly the planes, they stick with it. Going back tomorrow early to see the education program at work, and will be interviewing some of the kids.
Yesterday I visited the Pearson Air Museum in Vancouver, WA. It's located in the National Vancouver Historic Reserve, which is dominated by the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Some tension and uneasiness on the part of the aviation museum toward the NPS, which is sort of doing an amoeba-like consumption of the reserve. Kind of a extra-complicated position for me to be in, since I'm a student doing this research and also an NPS employee. Or maybe that makes me the perfect person to write about their situation?
Getting a little weary of the weekly trips. Two museums in one week is a bit rough. Next week is a more leisurely trip to Eugene. So far I've visited 5 of 8 museums. Getting through it.
I may just have to go for a walk. It is awfully nice out.
