Three times in the past 2 weeks I've been getting pointless invitations to Captain America: Civil War events... all of which has nothing to do with the actual movie. Disney's marketing and public relations people in Indonesia are coming up with the most inane and useless gimmicks to promote the movie which, IMHO, absolutely does not need this kind of promotion to begin with because it's already guaranteed to cash in a lot of money.
First there was the Marvel Creative Day event in which they invited four Indonesian artists who 'work for' Marvel Comics (as freelancers) to speak at a design school in one of the local universities. Which is fine, but it's not like they were talking about any Civil War staff, not even from the comic book point of view, because they were there mostly to share their experiences to aspiring young artists. In an educational way, yes, this is beneficial, but in a movie promo way? Not really. I wasn't even inspired to write about the event because, TBH, it's recycled stuff from when some of the same artists who were speakers in this even held a similar event in Kinokuniya. And if you've been to conventions like Indonesia Comic Con or STGCC, there really is nothing new here.
Funnily enough, a Disney rep (foreigner) came to this event and made a PowerPoint presentation for the students at the university. It included the second Civil War trailer. But PowerPoint? Really?
The second invitation I got was the most annoying one. It's a celebrity football match disguised as a movie promo. They even dared to split the teams using the names - wait for it - yes, Team Cap and Team Iron Man. I object so much to this event, I almost wish the movie will sink at the Indonesian box office, because that'll be the only punishment big enough for Disney for even thinking of this event.
Here are the reasons for my objections:
- The celebrities playing football is Indonesian B-listers. (Some of them are probably even C-list celebs.) I don't know who they are, what they're known for and why they should even be considered worthy to be members of 'Team Cap' or 'Team Iron Man'.
- The PR people sent multiple invitations that one of them arrived not in my inbox, but in my spam folder.
- They also sent multiple text messages as a reminder for the event.
- Not only did they spam me, they also spammed my friend. Oh, because editors working for the same magazine don't talk to each other and don't know how you're desperate enough to get the press to cover your useless event?
- Pretty sure this event doesn't have anything to do with the actual movie. Do we get to see Chris Evans or Robert Downey Jr or any member of the cast playing football? No? No. So why?
The third invitation is for something - I say 'something' because I'm quite vague with the activities on the event - that's happening tomorrow at the Sunday Car Free Day session. Um. I can't even rant about this because I'm not entirely sure what they're doing and why this event needs to exist.
Where's my invitation to cover Chris Evans' visit in Singapore? Didn't get one. Why? Because Disney doesn't think we're important enough to cover this big event. Oh, I thought you're one of Indonesia's premier movie magazines? Yes, we are, but Disney doesn't care. Who did they send then? Probably general media with reporters whose first question for Evans & Co. would have been, "What are the challenges of making this movie?"
(Yes, I'm bitter. I'm not ashamed to admit that. My magazine has been repeatedly overlooked by Disney because they really don't give a shit about quality reporting on their movies. I guess they don't give a shit about anything because their movies already make so much money and they don't need us anymore.)
Where's my invitation to the CiVil War screening? Didn't get one either. Why? Once again, because Disney doesn't give a shit.
I love Marvel movies, I do, this whole f*ckery doesn't change that. But honestly, I am thinking twice about writing about Disney movies now.
