A new obsession is born.
I just found out today (duh!) that Ben Whishaw's playing in a BBC series which everyone seems to be describing as a 'thriller/romance spy series', London Spy. The fact that Whishaw is in this has already convinced me to watch (his Q and Naomie Harris' Moneypenny were the only redeeming factors of Spectre for me) but then I saw the pictures.
Oh god the pictures. THE DELICIOUS PICTURES.
Of course, Danny, well... he's not the spy. That's his boyfriend, Alex. I did a double take when I read the description of the character Kingsman The Secret Service's Edward Holcroft plays. Alex is Danny's boyfriend. So, you mean there's a LGBT-themed spy series on British TV now? EPIC.
Well, that's just brilliant. Because I have been reading 00Q fanfics (Q is a much, MUCH better companion to Craig's Bond than Madeleine f*cking Swann. If they're going to replace Vesper Lynd with another woman, couldn't it have been Moneypenny? Even Camille Montes was better. So, no, I'm not enamored with Madeline freaking Swann. Therefore, I have to ship Bond with someone that makes more sense. And that's Whishaw's Q.) And I am on board with the idea of Queer Q. So seeing Whishaw in this series - a LGBT-themed spy series, which is not really about LGBTQ stuff but more about... well, whatever it is about, I can't tell because I haven't even gone halfway through the first episode.
Funnily enough, Holcroft played Charlie in Kingsman - that posh git who called Eggsy 'Eggy' early in the movie and ended up failing his spy test - and I always thought Charlie/Eggsy is a potentially interesting pairing because of their animosity. Being a fan of the Harry/Draco pairing, I always thought the idea of 'opposites attract' is always interesting. (To be fair, I always pair Eggsy up with Hugo when I'm writing but I like the idea of Charlie and Eggsy partnering up. Anything but Harry/Eggsy, really, because Harry is really reserved for Merlin obviously.)
So now I'm like: Q IS DATING CHARLIE! MI-6's Quartermaster dating a former Kingsman-trainee? That's even more appealing than any scandalous coupling that happens on Quantico! Oh, the headcanons... What a crossover that would make!
(Of course I realize something quite tragic happens between Danny and Alex. I read the reviews and, sigh, I suppose there wouldn't be a story if they both just rode into the sunset together in the first episode.) But still! I'm stoked for this series.
So I think this weekend I'll dedicate sometime to watch Spooks: The Greater Good (to reminisce the good ol' MI-5 days) and London Spy. Since Jekyll And Hyde's not playing and Gemma Chan's creepy star creeps me out in Humans, I'll focus on espionage rather than science fiction. A weekend spent in the company of Ben Whishaw's acting talent is always a plus!
