"Shake it!"

Jul 30, 2011 04:44

You would think a song with quite a bit of English in it would be easier to translate, but it's quite the opposite. There's some quite... inventive... English parts in here, and even now I'm pretty confused about what a couple of them are meant to mean in connection with the Japanese ^^;;

I'll add notes at the bottom to make certain bits clearer.

Anyway, on with the song! The lyrics to this one are actually pretty sexy and DoS, despite the light, dancey feel of the song. The song may officially be about "dancing", but it's quite clear what he's really singing about....

Shake it! - Matsumoto Jun

Caught by my secret trick, won't you burn it up hard for me?
Changing from a playful act to something more adult - Face & Fake - it's kinda nice, right?

Step By Step
Share this passion that's whirling around us, if we shake together, we'll take it Step By Step
If we merge together I hope it's Night & Day, just as our instincts desire
Sad & Cry
Shaking Dance Dance Dance, under the cover of night
I'll steal away the "you" that's sad & crying
See, isn't it easy? Just go with your feelings
And mix it up even harder than now

Dance Dance Dance
Dance Dance Dance, isn't learning about love from experience
Easier than having heavy talks about it? Don't use words,
Just feel the beat in your body for me

Shake It Body 今夜のNO.1のShiny Girl
Shake it Body, you're tonight's NO.1 Shiny Girl
You're Super Funky. And your body? It's Gorgeous
Count Down
Dance Dance, from the top of your head, Bounce Bounce, mmm, to the tips of your toes
Ride that Beat, deep down in your ears, on your ear drums feel the Count Down

Lonely Girl
My growingly intense demands are Gentle Style too, you're the Lonely Girl who's accepting it all
If we come together, right here I'll Show Love, before we ruin it with formalities

Your Just Dance
Now it's Dance Dance Dance, 'til our throats dry up
You need to find the dance that's just for you
See, isn't it easy? Just go with your feelings
And feel the beat in your body for me

Don't use words,
In your body, in your head, in your heart, feel the beat for me

NOTES:

1) Sad & Cry na kimi wo sarau - "I'll sweep away the "you" that's Sad & Crying" / "You're Sad & Crying, I make you mine".

The literal translation here is something like "I steal away the "you" that is Sad and Cry"
"Sarau" can mean to sweep away/sweep someone off their feet/make one's own.

But this leaves two possible meanings - "I'll steal away the "you" that is Sad & Cry" (ie. I'll make you happy), or literally just "You are "sad and cry", and I sweep you off your feet/make you mine". I prefer the first version, but it sounds pretty awkward when put into English.

2) Style de iu nara gorgeous sa - "And your body? It's gorgeous."

"Style" is often used to mean figure/body in Japanese, rather than the English meaning.

3) Hageshiku motometsutsu mo Gentle Style - "My growingly intense demands are Gentle Style too"

This is a bit of an English fail. "Hageshiku" means violently/roughly/intensely.... so it doesn't really make sense to go on and say "Gentle Style," but oh well ^^; Rough... but gentle, maybe?

4) Jouhou ni somaru mae ni - "before we ruin it with formalities"
Literally - "before we are/it is tainted with information". I.e. "we don't need to get to know each other first, it'll only ruin it!!"

5) Your Just Dance motomereba ii - "you need to find a dance just for you"

This confused me until I tried to work out what "your just dance" would have originally been in Japanese.
Kimi no (your) dake (just) dance..... kimi dake no dance! ( = A dance that's just for you). So I think that's what it means by "your just dance."
