Title: Lonely Hearts
Rating: PG
Pairing: Burke + Teddy, implied Owen/Cristina, Burke/Cristina, Teddy/Owen
Summary: Maybe they can stop being so alike in that they’re watching the loves of their lives love somebody else and finally be happy.

“Quit staring. It makes you look more pathetic than you already are,” Teddy half jokes, takes the opportunity of his surprise to stare for herself.

If anybody knows how he feels, it’s her.

“Dr. Altman, I’m most certainly not the one who looks pathetic in this situation,” he answers with a smug grin, turns his attention back to her, “it seems as though you’re displacing your feelings upon me.”

“Please, the love of your life is walking around the hospital married to somebody else-“

Burke chuckles slightly, shakes his head, “Somebody else, Altman? You mean the love of your life. And it’s only a matter of time. That’s something we both know.”

Teddy hears the determination in his voice and her heart aches slightly for him. It was a matter of time six months ago. But for some reason neither one will let go of something so incredibly hopeless that the entire hospital can see it, “Or maybe we’re kidding ourselves.”

This time he hears the hopelessness in her voice and he focuses his gaze on hers, “And what would you suggest?”

She shifts slightly under his gaze. He is Preston Burke, and her admiration of him has very little to do with his surgical skill. There’s something about his eyes, the intent gaze he always has, the smooth baritone of his voice.

And yet, he’s in love with another woman. The other woman that any man she’s attracted to seems to be desperately in love with. If it weren’t for their terse professional friendship, Teddy would hate the woman immensely.

“I would suggest that we wait it out,” Teddy finally says after a long pause, “waiting out is the best option.”

Another grin tugs at the corner of his mouth, “Oh. Is there another option?”

Teddy flashes an exasperated look in his direction, “Not if either one of us want to live, there isn’t.”

Burke’s eyebrow raises high on his forehead, curious as to exactly what options Dr. Altman is pondering. She’s not exactly his type, and his motives would be purely selfish, but she is attractive. He knows better though- he’s gotten involved with a coworker before and it didn’t end well, though it’s never really ended for him, “What are you thinking?”

That Cristina would find out and probably kill us, Teddy thinks. It’s her turn to be smug and she flashes him the same frustrating grin that he constantly wears. Her face lights up this time with a different idea, “I’m thinking that you should buy me a drink at Joe’s. Friday night.”

“Tomorrow night? What’s the problem, Altman, you need to fit me into your incredibly booked social calendar?”

“Actually,” Teddy says, lowering her voice and leaning over, “I’m trying to fit us into Yang’s social calendar.”

This gets Burke’s attention and he pulls out his phone to browse his calendar, “What time should I pick you up?”

“Pick me up, I didn’t mean it to be like a-“

“If you’re trying to do what I think you’re trying to do, and you are because you know how infuriated Hunt will be by the mere idea that you’re seeing me, then it needs to be real,” Burke is already reminding himself that it’s a mutual idea as he’s entering the pseudo-date into his calendar.

Teddy’s eyes shift to his. It was slightly her plan, but at the same time it wasn’t. It’s a means to an end though, maybe, hopefully.

Maybe they can stop being so alike in that they’re watching the loves of their lives love somebody else and finally be happy.

Or maybe they can just continue being miserable together.
