The Good and Bad of sports: Intro

Jun 27, 2010 21:52

I'm going to start a little section by where I say what I like and dislike about sports that are popular here in the States, and then what they can do to improve. Finally, I'm going to give what I think is the long-term outlook for their respective professional leagues.

LEGEND:

Game flow: Real-time, turn-based, or hybrid.
Style: Format of the game.
Emphasis: Offensive, defensive, or ball-possession game.
Result of scoring: Whether the team goes back on defense or remains on offense after scoring. Neutral means that this is determined by play after the scoring.
Critical position: The playing position that can single-handedly win a game.
Game length: Amount of time or turns allotted per regulation game.
Big scoring play: The premiere offensive play that occasionally stands alone as a match's only score.
Big defensive play: The major defensive play that often changes the course of the game.
Action-to-real-time ratio: How much of the actual time is spent on game action.
Clock stops when play stops? Whether or not the game clock stops for play stoppages.
Late-game rally strategy: The common strategy used to attempt to tie or win the game when a team is trailing by a small margin with little time remaining.

Pros: Everything I think is good about this sport and its highest professional league.

Cons: Everything I think is poor about this sport and its highest professional league.

Desired rule changes: Rule changes I would make to this sport. If this is a long list, then reasons may abbreviated or skipped entirely.

Long-term outlook: How well I think this sport will be doing twenty years from now or more.
