Yes, the Shire will be terribly changed when they return. Poor Sam felt a true shiver of fate.

Thanks. Yes, it will be quite a journey for all of the hobbits and their innocence will be a casualty. I think, in some ways, Sam's pragmatism will serve him better than the other's more idealized views of the world.
