We stand by the fence and watch as the new foal rises unsteadily in the bright spring sunshine.

Father’s eyes glisten with tears and I think I understand why- new life is always precious, after all, but to him, after all the death he has seen…

My brother’s eyes glisten with joy and I understand a little of why- being but days since the birth of his fourth son.

Our sons’ eyes glisten with wonder and I understand why immediately- new life is especially precious when witnessed for the first time.

My eyes glisten too.

I do not understand why.
