Halfway back to Edoras, snuffling woke him. Suspecting the mare, Gríma glared out of his swaddling of furs, then shrank away.
An impossibly large wolf stood over him.
He could swear it savored his terror.
Somebody above spoke. “You are?”
“Gríma, of Edoras,” he stammered.
The wolf-rider, delivering a note, vanished: You’re apt to find Mithrandir at Meduseld. Maintain your counsel regarding him. Do not engage him.

At Isengard weeks later, Gríma commented, “I’d not realized you commanded werewolves.”
Saruman nearly smirked. “Only their diminished progeny. Werewolves--were terrible.”
“Were?”
The wizard looked preoccupied. “They’re long gone.”

More notes for the pedantic among us: Unfinished Tales, “The Hunt for the Ring” version C has Saruman sending out Orcs and wolves (wargs, presumably) in pursuit of Gandalf after the latter’s 18 September escape from Orthanc; “among the pursuers were some bearing messages to [Gríma],” who was en route to Edoras.
