For three days, he only knew cold absence where she should have been. For three nights, he dreamt the land dead, never to live again, thirsting forever beneath a rainless sky.
Denethor knew not how he came to his sons’ chamber that final night. Boromir lay beyond hearing, dead to the world, Faramir curled in a tiny ball beside him, his bed abandoned.
Denethor’s eyes filled with tears.
Grey eyes flickered open, grief-worn and red. “Ada…?” Faramir stirred sleepily, waking Boromir.
Wordlessly, Denethor gathered them into his arms.
That night, cradling his sons close, he dreamt of rain, and life.
