Disclaimer: I dare say Tolkien sat through some interminable college dinners too... something a little lighter than my previous response to the challenge.
The dinner-table candles guttered, but still he went on... and on. The Goodtables’ fine dining was renowned, but they insisted on interminable discussions... was the recipe traditional? Spices correct? Vegetables just so?
Roonell Goodtable, widely suspected of ‘having a poker up his backside’ held forth... Frodo had disappeared - again! Merry and Pippin slumped with gritted teeth.
“Would you say these were Longstems or Shortleafs?” pontificated Roonell, forking up a carrot.
Suddenly, Pip nudged Merry, “Pudding!”
They dashed away, leaving Sam... who kept his head down until Roonell wandered off in search of further discourse.
“Huh! Carrots...!!” Sam shook his head.
