A Winter’s Tale
The lass lowered her broomstick. “Merry Brandybuck? But him got lost in the Old Forest-you told us!”
Twig was shaking. “I thought he was! They disappeared through the gate in the High Hay, Merry, Pippin, Frodo, and Frodo’s gardener, Sam. But apparently they’ve come back! What have I done?”
“But that was last winter,” whispered the lad. “They’ve been gone since last winter!”
“I know!” Twig hugged Merry closer. “If only I knew the tale of where they went-and why!”
“If only I knew who you were, and why you hit me!” Merry answered, pulling away.
