The gates creak and moan-swing open. The terrifying reality of our doom is revealed; there is an empty pit where my heart should be. I swallow past the incipient fear that rises.
Here is my doom, looming before me. Beneath the rubble and the debris, my body will ever lie, sung of only by the remnant of my people-enslaved by our great Enemy.
The trolls and orcs and foul things lunge forward; the press against us. Breathless, I surge onward, beating at them, battle-ready.
For if I must die, I will not live my last moments in cowardice.
