“Soul-cakes, Soul-cakes, please good missus, a soul-cake,
Apple, pear, plum or a cherry,
Any good thing to make our hearts merry…”

Young Boromir sang as lustily as the other lads as they made the rounds of carefully chosen households of the lower circles. His Amah and some trusted guards kept a discreet distance - so as not to reveal his ‘escapade’ was actually carefully choreographed.

Flushed with success, basket brimming, he babbled excitedly as the cart took them back to the citadel.

“This sugar-plum’s for Faramir, then he’ll have a merry heart too, wont he Amah?”

Many years later, the first Yule after War’s End… the streets were cleared of rubble, the worst houses were still stabilised with wooden scaffolding, but many were rebuilt. Faramir was visiting his old Amah’s house on the second circle, when they heard piping voices carolling for soul-cakes.

At the outer-door - bright-eyed boys sang lustily, holding pole-lanterns to light their way. She doled out cherries and marchpane and they left, contented…

Amah turned, offering sugar-plums to Faramir.

“To make your heart merry…”

Both remembered Boromir… and smiled.

“…Apple, pear, plum or a cherry,
Any good thing to make our hearts merry…”
